About Rothay Garden Hotel

Originally built in the 1850s as a private home, Rothay first became a guest house in the 1960s, evolving over the years into today’s award-winning 30-bedroom four-star hotel, spa and restaurant. The property has beautiful mature gardens running down to the River Rothay with two enormous 200-year-old copper beech trees taking pride of place. The two-AA-rosette Garden Restaurant is an upmarket conservatory dining room serving classic English and French cuisine with some modern twists. Souffles are a speciality here and there is a fabulous selection of wines too sourced from their supplier of more than 30 years. The Rothay Garden is a real oasis within the Lake District haven of Grasmere.

We had breakfast 3 times and dinner on Sunday evening. Breakfast was nicely cooked, a little slow on Saturday and the continental breakfast needs a bit more choice I think. Dinner on Sunday was delicious, my steak was beautiful.

Very expensive, almost unreasonable. £14 for 3 prawns for a starter? On both occasions, breakfast and dinner we waited up to an hour for our food. This really let it down. Wouldn’t choose to eat/stay again.

Very good dinner but we found the menu very limited for fish lovers and vegetarians. The cooked breakfast was disappointing and the smoked salmon was inedible. Good selection for continental breakfast. We were only given a small jug of coffee for two people and both days had to ask for more. There were no serving utensils for croissants and toast. Really not what we expected from a four star hotel.

A lovely meal in a wonderfully peaceful environment. The salmon and chicken dishes were both cooked and seasoned to perfection with nicely prepared vegetables. The staff were knowledgeable but also most friendly and engaging. We do hope to be back sometime!

Had a lovely evening at Rothay Garden restaurant. Food (we had cod & salmon) tasted really good and was cooked perfectly. Wine was chilled and refreshing, a pinot grigio blush. Service was superb as were our surroundings. A fabulous experience start to finish and we would definitely return. Thank you.

Wonderful attentive polite and knowledgeable staff. There's aren't many places these days that take all the ladies orders first and pour for the ladies first. Lovely food and not that much more expensive than the rest of the restaurants in Grasmere. Ribeye, venison, salmon and pork steak all perfectly cooked. Crisp, white tablecloths. Interesting service charge (£7.50 or 10% whichever is least) would have been happy to round up further. Well worth consideration... We're even going to see if there are any deals to stay later in the year
