About Ship Inn

Recently relaunched under a new management team, The Ship Inn at Caton is an historic village inn dating back 400 years to the start of the seventeenth century. It’s long been a haven for weary travellers heading up the Lune Valley from Lancaster and is part of the Forest of Bowland AONB. There’s a renewed focus on food here with the new kitchen team serving lunch and dinner seven days a week. Choices range from traditional pub classics to more adventurous fare based firmly around locally sourced produce. Sunday Lunch is very popular with a choice of meats available. The Ship is also a community hub with regular music events and a quiz night.

We came but you were closed. Nobody called to let us know you wouldn’t be open at 12:30 on a Sunday

We have visited Caton regularly over the last 4 years and always eat out at one or both of the local pubs. Unfortunately our experience here on Friday night was really disappointing and we probably won't bother booking again. We waited an hour for our food (having been told that a lot of items on the menu were not available) and there were only three or four other tables of diners in so I'm not sure why it took so long. The young girl serving us was a delight and she couldn't have been more helpful/ apologetic, but if it hadn't been for her we would have probably walked out. The food, when it arrived, was quite nice and we ate it all but we didn't bother with a dessert and just wanted to leave. Quite a shame for a birthday meal, although we did appreciate the complimentary drink offered as an apology .

A very disappointing visit to The Ship for a family meal out. Food was very average and seemed quite overpriced for what you got. Unfortunately, our visit collided with a lively group of mainly men stood around the bar, which was quite intimidating when we entered. Their language was foul and a heated argument erupted so the atmosphere was definitely not relaxing! This was not what we were expecting to deal with in front of our three sons. A woman was also openly vaping in front of bar staff and nothing was said to her. The behaviour of other guests should have been dealt with more appropriately. A man apologised for his language on our way out but our evening had been ruined. We were barely there for an hour and asked for the bill as soon as we’d finished. I think the restaurant has changed owners a couple of times in the last few years but it’s safe to say we won’t be returning any time soon.

Disappointing Valentine’s Evening meal. Menus not ready when we arrived and service poor. We expected the main menu to be available alongside the Valentine’s one. Lots of dishes unavailable so choice was limited. Spoke to other diners and they were of the same opinion. Will not be visiting again.

We visited for Sunday lunch, not having been in the inn for some 20+ years. The Crook hand pump ale was excellent. Sunday lunch consisted of roast beef with roast and mash, yorkshire pudding and vegetables and lashings of superb gravy. The beef was wonderful, as good as any that I have eaten and very much better that lots. This was a beautiful plate of food, served in a timely manner by very helpful staff. I would, and will, be very pleased to go back to try it again.

Visited here at the weekend as we were staying in the area. Overall very disappointing- firstly they couldn't find our reservation then we were seated and waited over 30 minutes to get menus. During this time there was an altercation between the ?manager and 2 ladies who had complained about the food being cold. The way this man shouted at the customers was dreadful. At least 3 other tables who arrived after us were served and eventually after about an hour we got our food which wasn't very hot. Meat very fatty, vegetables over cooked and roast potatoes reheated/refried. Extra gravy came in a ramekin as opposed to a gravy boat that other tables got. There was an offer on for 2 meals for £20 which was just as well as we would not have paid the £18.50 per head! Staff were disorganised with only one seeming to know what was going on. Whilst we were waiting for our food the chef was in the bar chatting to someone. We did express our disappointment in the food but nobody came to talk to us about it. Given the attitude of the manager to previous customers it was a blessing in disguise I suppose

I was very surprised to recieve a thank you email today asking me to make a review following a booking made for new years eve at 18:30. The reason I was taken aback by this was that as we arrived prompty to take up our reservation for 4 on time, we were informed by a very embarassed server that the chef had closed the kitchen and was no longer serving food. As you can imagine this left us high and dry on new years eve with no option but to walk back home (yes we are all locals) and start cooking! The pub had my contact details and not even attempted to contact me, we are disgusted with their complete absence of customer service and shocking lack of care.

Food was good for pub food what you'd expect value for money was great coming from a major city you would expect to pay twice as much

We enjoyed a lovely meal here with friends. The food was good. The pub has a welcoming feel to it , and the staff were great.

The service was good but the food was terrible. All the bread had been microwaved so was rock hard and inedible (on my son’s burger and our garlic bread). I had the trimmed chicken and it was so salty it was disgusting. I felt sick afterwards and was actually sick when I got home.
