Laura 'curry Monster' Robinson
I am a self-confessed curry monster - a real fan of Indian food and after sampling the cuisine of so many restaurants around the country I consider myself as a bit of an expert! So if my opinion is anything to go by it's impressive that I count the Spice Cube as in my top three Indian restaurants of all time. You can really tell that it's not just a curry house with the usual one-pot cooking sauces and westernised variations. You can see and taste that each dish is cooked differently and there is a great variety of regional dishes from across India on the menu. The flavours are complex and delicate. There's plenty of spice if you like it hot like me, but the chefs clearly appreciate the diversity of the cuisine and the other flavours used are just as stunning. The staff are really helpful, polite and don't seem to be able to do enough to help you enjoy yourself. Based in the Gate leisure complex in Newcastle, it's clearly a cut above the other food outlets in its quality and it's surprisingly competitive on price when you take the time to compare what the others are offering.

Spice Cube came highly recommended by a friend who thoroughly enjoyed the food so my wife and I went last Saturday night, not just for a night out, we were hungry after a long hard day. Spice Cube is a clean, classy-decorated restaurant but as we discovered it was an expensive fast-food joint. Dinner for a two-course dinner cost £60. My wife had chicken and I had fish - the spiciest one on the menu. It tasted like something out of an ASDA can. They forgot the "spice". To top it off I asked for a cup of Massala Chai tea. The waiter asked me if I wanted it from a "Twinning tea bag". I said no, I wanted it brewed. Within 30 seconds he returned. No way it could have been brewed and if it was the chef does not understand how to make massala tea. It was weaker than a cup of regular tea. I won't eat there again nor will I recommend it. I told my friend she was dead wrong about her recommendation.

I am writing this review to just say what a disappointment the Spice Cube was when I recently visited early in November. The food was of average quality but the service was just not up to scratch. I had gone at the suggestion of a friend, who said it is an ok place to eat if you need to eat out somewhere before going to the cinema. The food was not warm enough when it arrived at the table, but presentation was good. It just let the place down.

I can honestly say that this was the worst meal I have ever had. I ordered chicken tikka massala, I basic dish, which when it arrived was chicken in luke warm tomato soup!!! My partner had the jalfreizi, which I am convinced came from a jar of Sharwwods cooking sauce. Very expensive and extremely disappointing.

A lovely tasty and aromatic curry. One of the best ive ever had. The standard of cuisine here is far above that of any Indian restaurant i have eaten in. The special events held on a regular basis is an excellent idea for lovers of good food and the early evening special and lunch offers are good value for money

Spice Cube is a classy and modern Indian food chain which is backed up by some very good food (which tastes genuinely fresh, unlike some cheaper Indian places). Prices are, unfortunately, on the pricey side (as you'd expect for The Gate) - but it's well worth a visit if you're not in a rush (rather than 'discreet', I would describe the service as 'absent').

i went with my girlfriend for the spice cube Sunday dinner i think it was 2 courses for £8 or something I started with spicy lentil soup which taken from Scottish recipe had been altered to taste Indian finished with coriander and chilli oil the main was marinated slow roast lamb the meat was brilliant and the veg were what you would expect from Indian take on the Sunday dinner my gf had steak followed by a home made chocolate tort with raspberry coulis (all homemade) the service wasn? excellent and it was very quiet also being in the gate there is a lot of background noise but all in all good food brilliant price

on my list of top 10 this is no. 2 and i have been to a lot, service is a bit slow at busy times only to be expected, beer not to hot or should I say it was a bit warm but apart from that very highly recommended go try it. ITS THE WAY FORWARD! ah-ha
