About The George and Dragon

Set in the picturesque village of Hudswell, just outside Richmond, The George and Dragon occupies a special place in Yorkshire pub history as the county's first community-owned pub. Long cherished by locals, walkers and visitors exploring the Dales, it pairs a warm, traditional atmosphere with stunning views across the Swale Valley, best enjoyed from the spacious beer terrace in summer or beside the open fire after a winter walk through nearby Hudswell Woods. Since taking over in March 2026, Sam and Becky Harrison have brought a wealth of hospitality experience and a deep affection for the area to the pub. Between them they have worked across every corner of the trade, from village pubs and cafés to gastropubs and professional kitchens, most recently revitalising the Exelby Green Dragon and earning a reputation for quality food, friendly service and consistently well-kept cask ales. Their approach at The George and Dragon has been to build on everything that already made the pub special while introducing a fresh food offering rooted in the outstanding produce of the Yorkshire Dales. The menu combines properly executed pub classics with seasonal specials, complemented by a carefully selected drinks range and the genuine hospitality that lies at the heart of this much-loved village local.

What a lovely friendly pub! We have eaten here twice this week and both times the food was beautiful. We had steak pie the first time which was packed with meat and covered in the nicest gravy! The second time we had Sunday lunch which was all home made with lovely fresh veg. We would definitely recommend!

I love this pub for its range of beers and gorgeous beer garden with a beautiful view. Staff are friendly and welcoming. On this occasion most of our party had the chicken skewers to eat - beautifully presented, and tasty too. We’ll be back again soon.

Best pies in the district. Friendliest and most accommodating Landlord in the district. Best locals in the district. There is a good chance that I am a bit biased, but there is also a good reason for that. (Best pies in the district)

What an outstanding meal and experience. If you’re looking for an inauthentic tourist experience with a bunch of guys running around in red jackets and beefeaters… This is not the place for you. Here you have a bunch of English friends hanging out together… And they invite you into their community for one evening. The beer was excellent… The fish and chips knocked our little American socks off. This is a very special place. The price may be a bit dear… But don’t flinch… Just pay and laugh all the way home. Oh, and did I mention the epic view. Epic. As wonderful as the English language language is… It does not have the architecture to describe the beauties of this view. You’ll have to see for yourself.
