About Mistal Kitchen

The Mistal Kitchen is a café-restaurant at Otley Chevin overlooking Lower Wharfedale and on the edge of Chevin Forest Park, a popular destination for walkers. It occupies converted farm buildings at Yorkgate Farm alongside Chilli Barn, a popular wedding venue. Mistal (messy stall) is the old name for a cow shed which the building once was and both Barn and Mistal are owned by the same family that have lived and worked at Yorkgate Farm for six generations. The menu is vegan and vegetarian with a daytime brunch and light lunch menu alongside Mistal’s own cakes, Baltzersens pastries and other goodies. Try the Crispy duck fried egg with Mistal hash browns, avo and grilled tomato or Cinnamon French toast with crème fraiche, berries and honey for brunch. And for lunch maybe the Yorkshire rarebit or Paneer masala on a paratha flatbread. The delicious coffee is from Casa Espresso.

First time at The Mistal Kitchen for Saturday brunch/lunch. Our party of 5 all made different food choices and were all delighted with the food that came. Generous portions and beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and the service was prompt. We will definitely return. Thank you.

We had booked a table for Sunday lunchtime, at 12, hoping we might be able to have the Sunday roast however it had already sold out. We love the food at Mistal so easily made other choices and, as usual, the food was excellent. Unfortunately, however, the service was very slow and not particularly friendly. On arrival we immediately ordered child's beans on toast for a hungry toddler and it took 40 minutes to arrive. The rest of our meals, ordered a short while later, took another 50 minutes to come. This is not the first time we have been disappointed with Mistal service and it puts us off returning for anything more than coffee and cake in future. Such a shame as the food is reliably good.

I booked a table for Sunday lunchtime for my partner’s birthday having searched on the internet for Vegetarian Café’s near Otley. Upon arrival we were ignored by 3 staff behind the counter until a fourth younger member of staff finally arrived, who had been serving, and took us to our table. Having chosen from the menu, I ordered from the counter, as instructed, and was asked to pay up front which is not too unreasonable, I suppose, considering there are also many outside tables. However, I did find it strange (and embarrassing) that when paying by card I was prompted to reject/accept paying a tip for a service and food that we had not yet had. The food (Sweetcorn fritters) was very tasty and just as described, though if I am honest, I would have liked a slightly bigger portion for the price. Neither of us are particularly in a rush to go back for a second time even though the environment/surroundings are nice.

I brought a group of cycling friends to the cafe for their first visit at the weekend. Everyone was delighted with the food & location & said they'd be back. I would like to request you add stands for cyclists to lock their bikes up. We had to sit outside to ensure the bikes were safe, luckily it was a nice day otherwise it would have been a problem. Thanks

Supper club diner
Really lovely meal at supper club as always, thank you. Noticeable that potions have decreased in order to maintain prices in these crazy times, but we both left feeling full, and used to find portions were unmanagably huge, so we both felt this was a positive step. It's lovely to not be rushed for a second sitting and staff are always lovely and super thoughtful about where best to accomodate our guide dog. In our tucked away corner our drinks and mains were both clearly forgotten, there were several new staff and they maybe need a bit more training. We thought the menu was slightly less innovative than some we have had here before, but still really tasty.
