About Gilroy’s Restaurant at The Morritt

The Morritt Arms Hotel sits in the Teesdale countryside at Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, and has a rich history stretching back to the seventeenth century. Today a four-star country house hotel, spa retreat and popular wedding venue, it was visited by Dickens, Turner and Sir Walter Scott and in the middle of last century famous artist John Gilroy created much of the artwork that adorns the walls of the casual dining Dickens Bar and Bistro. Gilroy’s Restaurant is the AA-rosetted fine dining restaurant in the main house where young and passionate Head Chef Ory Vanes serves classic English dishes with a modern twist. The menu changes regularly and is based around fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Gilroy’s is open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

Really lovely food, we stayed overnight for dinner bed and breakfast package. We had cheese soufflé starter and I had feather blade beef for main and my wife had stone bass. The service was great and the food was well presented. After having the starter and main course we couldn’t manage a dessert. I would highly recommend the restaurant. You can also choose from the pub menu too even though you are in the restaurant. So if soon the bar menu grabs your eye you can have that as well.

I was disappointed, I was with my two friends, we each had a voucher for an evening 3 hour spa, tapas board and glass of Prosecco, on arrival we were informed it’s not a tapas board anymore but either a sharing board or a grazing board, we were given the menu to pick either the veg or meat grazing board but when I asked what the sharing board had on it the staff member informed me she did not know and didn’t attempt to find out for us, at this point I did express my disappointment that it wasn’t the tapas board that I had booked and paid for but I was just told it was the grazing platter now. I do feel if you sold vouchers for tapas boards this should be honoured as it’s false advertisement. We did not receive a grazing board each like our vouchers stated but instead one between us, it had little on it, it consisted of bread, salami, Parma ham, terrine, olives and a chutney. The bread was also stale. There was also a drunk person in the bar who was quite rowdy so we moved tables, he later came to tell us he finished off the food on our board after we left. Overall I was disappointed as I have been before and had a much better experience.

Amazing food, lovely restaurant. Stayed overnight at The Morritt Hotel and booked in for an evening meal. Had a hectic few weeks and needed someone to chill out. This turned out to be the perfect place.

Afternoon tea was lovely. The sandwiches and cakes were well-presented and delicious. Another couple were eating at the same time but the restaurant didn’t have any atmosphere. You could hear people checking in at reception and staff chatting. Maybe some music would help? Staff were wandering through the restaurant saying they were starving, organising cover for their break. They took chairs from the restaurant to sit in the adjoining room and eat their food. It felt a little unprofessional. We all enjoyed the food but probably wouldn’t rush back.

Wow. I couldn’t believe how good the food was. A huge creamy portion of salmon linguine with perfectly Al dente courgette followed by a unique spiced rice pudding with poached pear, crumble and edible flowers. The staff were lovely and the Dining room was beautiful with a cosy mix of country style and formal dining room.

Me and my Husband had the spa package with 2x course meal and prosecco a birthday present off my daughter . Spa was lovely and relaxing, staff we very friendly. We had our meal in Gilroy s restaurant. Dawn who served us was very pleasant and friendly. I had piri piri chicken which was nice. My husband had smoked salmon linguine....he said it was very oily so didn't really enjoy it. The overall place was very nice.

Wow. What a surprise find. I booked the hotel to break a long journey home to Ireland. To be honest, I was only expecting pub grub. It was quiet night, so quiet atmosphere, which suits me, very friendly staff. The food was value for money, no complaints there. The food was excellent, so much so I actually photographed the menu for future reference. I would highly recommend, if you are staying at the hotel, book a table and enjoy. If you are not staying, it’s well worth a night out with fine dining. Staff

Not busy so no atmosphere. The service was OK but I had fish and chips which should be re-named fish finger and chips since it was a single fillet cut in half lengthways! Only an inch wide and when I pointed this out the person serving agreed that it was small but nothing else happened. The other meals in the party were fine so please stop skimping on the fish fillet.
