About The New Conservatory

The New Conservatory is one of the few remaining independent bar-restaurants in Leeds city centre and has been in business since 1984. Open all day, every day it’s always buzzing whether with shoppers – it’s close by the Merrion Centre - or later on with the after-work crowd. A huge mahogany bar dominates this largely subterranean gastropub and it has an authentic Victorian feel to it. You can dine in style in the Library restaurant or anywhere else you choose (including al fresco on the terrace) and there are a range of menus including a la carte, early bird, Sunday roast, gluten free, sandwiches & wraps and a kids menu. Expect world cuisine with plenty of choice to suit all tastes. The New Conservatory has two sommeliers to advise on wines and serves cask marque ales as well as a wide range of spirits, craft beers and cocktails. There are also events running throughout the week including a quiz night on Monday, live music on Thursdays and DJs at the weekend.

A Leeds institution!

Just popped in to use their toilet, to tell the truth! Then had a peek at the menu over a drink. Decided I wasn't too hungry so ordered a ham sandwich, thinking that is what I would get. Well, when it arrived it was superb, and accompanied by a lovely salad! All very fresh and tasty and beautifully presented. Absolutely delicious! Returned a couple of weeks later, ordered the same, hoping it would be as good as previously. It was! A very large young man appeared from the kitchen and laid it before my companion and I with a cheerful flourish, wishing us Bon Appetit in a Scottish accent..... Next time I am going to try something from their main menu, having heard some great reports.

Came to Leeds for the day shopping with my mam and came across this place so decided to give it a go there was so much to choose from open the menu all home made too decided on the sampler 2 share and cheese board with a bottle of house white the food was absolutely fantastic and presentation great and the atmosphere in the place was lovely away from all the hustle and bustle of the city it was really cosy ended up staying for 2 hours wanted to try all the menu just wish this place was in middlesbrough would be here every week.and the staff were also very friendly.

Have just spent the weekend in Leeds and visited the Conservatory every day for lunch and for a quick drink in the evening. The staff, service and food were fantastic, make sure you visit this wonderful eatery when visiting Leeds, its a definite must.

Very very good city centre bar. Lovely decor and great atmosphere, especially when live music is on which is always great. Food is excellent and they have a new menu. There is a fantastic pool area with large flat screen TV and all in all its a great place to go for a pint and a game of pool after work!

I am shocked to see such high reviews for this place that dares to call itself a restaurant! I have just spent a most unpleasant lunchtime in there - anywhere else on a monday lunchtime in town you would expect to be served with a smile, in a timely manner and treated with some degres of respect as after all you are the paying customer. Problems started when there was one person taking food orders and running the bar. The queue was five long and needless to say the service was slow. Once we had eventually placed our food order along with two carbonated drinks by the time we got back to our table we were told there was no bread as they were waiting on a delivery so had to pick something else. We opted for the fish finger sandwiches for which we were told they had bread rolls so could serve them. We had a sip of our drink to find the in both the lemonade and coke the syrup had run out so we called the one waitress over to ask if we could have replacements only to be told we had to join the back of the queue for the bar if we wanted new drinks which was now 10 long and showed no signs of moving. Our food came and to say i was disappointed is an understatement. The quality of the fish fingers were that of Lidl (hnestly Icelands are better) and hardly cooked (fried hard but practically raw inside) and the apparent seasame bun resembled a squashed warbertons roll that you can get for 6 for a £1. The chips were also deep fried to within an inch of their lives as well. They had the cheek to charge £5.95 for this apparent culinary delight. I was all for complaining and demanding an explanation but finding an appropriate person to complain to was hard enough and as my lunch hour was almost up after all the queuing that was required i walked out thoroughly disappointed and very angry. I say to anyone who is even marginally tempted to have a "light bite" in this "restaurant" to think again and go spend your hard earned money elsewhere! Absolutely shocking and if Gordon Ramsey had a grave he would most certainly be turning in it!

Dire in most respects! The Welsh Rarebit was a joke: one piece of cheese on toast does not constitute a Welsh Rarebit! Lattes were coffee-less and the menu was stodgy, unimaginative and limited: totally boring and uninspiring in fact. A very poor experience.

Great place to chill after work, live pianist on Thursdays and Fridays is excellent. Pizza pasta offer that they do for £5.95 including a drink is great. This place is a forgotten oasis! if you haven't been since you were young you need to go! staff very friendly
