About The Old Canteen

The Old Canteen at Shelley, near Huddersfield, is housed in an old mill that lay derelict for years until Alison and Nicky Wright and Lewis Robinson got together to give the building a new lease of life. They have created a calm and inviting space which can accommodate up to 55 diners with room for another 10 in a decked al fresco area. Head Chef Lewis has built up a wealth of experience at various Yorkshire hostelries, including the two-AA-rosette Wortley Arms where he was Chef de Partie. He sources local produce from community businesses wherever possible and the Barncliffe Brie on the menu is made just 100 yards away. The Old Canteen opens at 9am to 4pm weekdays (and until 2pm Saturdays) serving breakfasts, sandwiches, omelettes, panins and jackets as well as more substantial main courses such as Rump steak with lyonnaise potatoes, a daily risotto and his signature Yorkshire pudding with onion gravy. They also open for Sunday Lunch from noon until 5pm and the first Friday of the month sees a special theme night. An outside catering service is also available.

My wife and I visited to redeem our Groupon voucher for an "afternoon cream tea" Booking was required; and was difficult to achieve. Having been given dates weeks away, when I phoned back, I was given dates, months away. I insisted that I already had available dates to consider and was booked in straight away. When we went, the place was almost empty: Our cream tea had no cream and looked nothing like the advertisement. The sandwiches were fresh and pleasant, the pieces of cake were no more than small bits of chocolate brownie or similar. Two desserts each in tall glasses; a chocolate mousse with bits of merengue and a so called trifle which comprised a bit of custard, very dry sponge and a couple of pieces of strawberry. A very disappointing experience. We will not go back.

Have visited many times for lunch, the menu and food has always been totally amazing. Visited today for breakfast. I'm really sorry to say this but today it felt like the Canteen had been taken over by children. (staff, not customers) After initial problems with drinks were resolved we then met problems with food. My friend ordered large breakfast and asked for poached eggs but they came fried. I ordered the poached eggs with bacon, hollandaise sauce and a muffin, I cut into the poached egg and a river of water was followed by a raw egg. I couldn't eat it. The young man who had served us came with a smile, oblivious to the uneaten meal and asked us if we had enjoyed it. I discretely explained why I hadn't eaten it and that I wouldn't be paying for it. On paying for our meal we found that just a pound had been taken off the price of the meal because of the raw egg. All very embarrassing. What has happened to the lovely Canteen? I'm afraid we won't be back.

Go there occasionally for takeout sandwich as I work locally. Good food but was robbed last time of £6.70 for a ham salad sandwich and bacon/sausage sandwich. Captive work audience on their doorstep but way too pricey for takeout. Waitress didn't smile (never does). Rest of staff lovely though, and great decor and atmosphere if you're eating in.

Visited today for first time after recommendation from a friend. We had a pleasant experience, food was tasty & hot, the only thing lacking was a bit of colour garnish on the paninis but otherwise food was well presented (love the "bucket" of chips!). Prices were reasonable, service friendly & efficient & we were offered hot water to top up the tea. The colourful, interesting decor gave a nice ambience. The cafe has full wheelchair access & disabled facilities & is now licensed. Don't go on a Monday however as they are not open! Will be back soon to check out the afternoon tea!

Me and my wife visited the old canteen one Saturday morning and it was an experience to forget. We both had a chicken main and the food was a huge disappointment, both came undercooked and the veg was cold and the potatoes were black. When we complained we were made to feel so uncomfortable we just paid and left. I would not recommend this to anyone. Very expensive for low standard food

We visited the Old Canteen over the bank holiday weekend. We were so very impressed with the afternoon tea, which was so reasonably priced. It was busy and the ambience was wonderful. The market place selling bric a brac is a real find.

Not been here before but we were very happy with what we had. The food was all very tasty and well priced. We found the staff friendly and attentive. It was about half full when we were there but I'm sure it gets very busy because of the value on offer, worth a try!
