i wouldn't go to this place again if i were starving.
this was supposed to be a bit of a treat for my partner and i during Xmas 2009.
i booked a heathcote place thinking the man could cook , how badly wrong i was.
i am lucky enough to have eaten all over the world , so i like to think i know a bit about food , i am also a keen cook
the Chianti was fine as were the steaks even though they were tiny , on enquiring about vegetables i was told that they were 3 pounds extra a portion , so my instinct being to leave , but not wanting to spoil the night for my partner i ordered new potatoes and broccoli.........3 small new potatoes and 3 small shoots of microwaved broccoli for 6 quid , somebody is having a laugh and it wasn't me.
having wanted to have a special evening and maybe wanting to learn a bit we had earlier ordered the soft continental bread and hummus which i think was about 4 quid........i associate soft continental bread with something tasty and warm and copious , and spending a lot of time abroad i usually find this to be free or very inexpensive , however we were having a special evening
4 quid gets you on pitta bread and a tablespoon full of hummus , no oils no extras just a small pitta bread.....retail cost 5p if that and a tasteless hummus that i could have made at home for 10p....not a bad mark up eh?
the restaurant offered insult to injury by not returning my email..i did go to the trouble to phone them , they said they would ring back....they haven't.
come on Britain boycott rip off merchants like this or we will be forever and ever ripped off.

We ate at the Olive Press in Bolton last week and had a really enjoyable evening. The restaurant was quite busy for a Wednesday night, and there was a really good, relaxed atmosphere. To start we had scallops off the specials menu and a mozzarella, tomato and roasted red onion salad. The salad was much tastier than it sounds, with excellent mozzarella. Our main courses were also excellent: spaghetti with spicy lamb meatballs and brick-fired scallops served in the shell with polenta. My husband cleared his plate of the spaghetti, and confirmed it was very good. I can say that the scallops dish from the 'from the grill' part of the menu is to die for - absolutely delicious. Pudding was a chocolate brownie which is also recommended. This is a great restaurant with friendly efficient staff and excellent service. Thoroughly recommended.

Having been told about the quality of Paul Heathcotes restaurants, we decided to try out the Olive Press in Bolton and we weren't disappointed! The food, service and atmosphere were lovely and we'll be going again soon.

I don’t know why we haven’t been before. Although we normally eat out of town, the Olive Press was less expensive than we both thought and really very good. My partner and I shared an excellent garlic bread with sour cream and spring onions and a plate of hand carved ham, it was the first time I’ve seen this done in this country. The ham was fantastic, much much better than the sliced pre packet stuff that I would buy in the supermarket.
We both had main courses, I had an excellent pasta with Zucchini and although I am not vegetarian, far from it, there was a lot of choice for them (I’ve already recommended it to my veggie sister). My partner’s rump steak and chips was declared “top and tasty†excellent meat, full of flavour and brilliant chips. He also had a side dish of spinach with pine nuts which I ate most of as I do like my veggies. Having to eat with my sister has had an influence on me.
Two desserts both good, an Italian trifle made with amaretti biscuits and raspberries for him & a gelato for me. We both shared to be honest but both agreed that they were worth having again, although we had no room. A bottle of red was recommended by the waiting on staff who were chatty and friendly. The place is rustic yet quite modern with a great atmosphere. I’m returning with my veggie sisters in two weeks time and I’ll have to forget the ham unfortunately - 10 out of 10.

Oh dear! I'm surprised at the reviews for the Olive Press - my partner and I visited for lunch for his birthday (though admittedly, approx 6 mths ago) and were served what were evidently frozen chips. When I complained to the manager, there was no attempt at reparation; the person we spoke with merely stated that they were 'working on that' and that was the end of the matter. Not worth a revisit - plenty of other fabulous places to eat in the area!

I found this simply by searching the net and was surprised that it was a Heathcotes establishment. As with any Heathcotes restaurant the food was well cooked and put together. Fantastic atmosphere over two floors - try to eat upstairs so you get a great view of the restaurant. One very fine place to eat in Bolton
