About The Shepherds Rest Inn

The Shepherds Rest Inn sits in the hills southeast of Todmorden and boasts fabulous views out over Calderdale. It’s a family owned free house with a bar and restaurant and an extensive outside area to make the most of the views. There’s a good selection of lagers, cask ales and wines to complement the freshly prepared food. The extensive menu has plenty of choice with a good selection of mains, burgers and grills alongside their multi-award-winning Baldy’s artisan pastry pies. They also do sharing boards on selected days including their signature Tomahawk 32 which is available only as a pre-order.

The Shepherd’s Rest is a very welcoming pub. All the staff are lovely and we have never had a meal that is anything less than perfect here. Would recommend it to anyone wanting delicious food in great surroundings in a beautiful location.

Went for Sunday lunch. Good portions size with good amount of roast meat selection. Lots of gravy. Friendly staff.

A great pub in a brilliant location! We opted for Sunday roasts and they were all fantastic. Portions were huge and the service was second to none. Plenty of parking, loads of outdoor seating - some covered and with heating. There's also a small play area that my granddaughter really enjoyed.

Four of us dined at the Shepherds Rest on Friday the3rd April, and we all enjoyed the excellent food we ordered it was really good. The service was also spot on with the friendly and efficient staff. I would recommend the Shepherds Rest to anyone. Thank you.

We came for food yesterday which was amazing as always. We love coming for a meal here as we are always guaranteed to get really good food. Unfortunately yesterday the service wasn’t as good as it normally is so that was a bit of a shame.

The Shepherds Rest is a firm favorite if I am ever in the area with family. Mum appreciated the "Smaller Plates" and had a wonderful lightly battered fish and rustic jumbo chips. I went for the enormous Surf and Turf which was dripping in garlic butter and a staggeringly delicious abundance of salt and pepper chips. My son had the shepherds pie and whilst we weren't expecting a whole lamb shank (as others were below) we were expecting something more substantial in line with the other meals. However, it tasted delicious and I had more than enough to share mine with him. We couldn't resist home made crumble and custard for dessert and were supplied extra custard happily upon request. The crumble topping was amongst the best I have had being not to sweet, nice and crunchy and a perfect ratio of crumble to apple.

A warm welcome on entering and shown straight to our table. The food as before was beyond expectations. Fresh good quality food served every time. Super friendly service and great setting.

The place is well situated with lovely panoramic views, despite the care-home interiors the place has a decent, family, atmosphere. The bar menu is comprehensive and they have a range of food options that will cater well to a broad set of dietary needs. Prices are relatively low and portions are relatively large, if that is all you are concerned about this may be a good option for you. Staff at the restaurant are friendly but service is very unpolished. A review of hospitality practice would be beneficial. We were not welcomed and had to seek out the assistance of a team member directly. Staff seem inexperienced and unable to cope with busy service. They were perhaps a little overly casual for a sit down restaurant and would scurry away the second they were done with the order. We ordered the small Sunday roast. The food itself was presented in a style reminiscent of the heyday of mid-2000s gastropubs. Food was stacked in an abstract tower with a pool of gravy and a smattering of microgreens. A precariously mounted, gravy filled, Yorkshire pudding crowns the dish making for a hazardous experience for those who might choose to wear white. At the tower’s base was a dollop of mash so salty I was unable to taste much of the rest of the meal. The meat was dry and flavourless. For pudding I had the chocolate brownie, the brownie was perfectly fine (I’m not sure it’s possible for a brownie not to be). The ice cream was grainy with ice crystals visible. In the end we left having only been able to eat about half of the roast and with a distinct sense that this wasn’t my sort of restaurant. I would be interested to try the shepherds rest again on a quieter day so see if the issues I experienced were a result of the busy service. I would recommend this restaurant to families looking for a cheap meal with nice views.
