About The Talbot

Diners are strongly advised to book as tables and covers are limited and with a reduced menu. All safety precautions and necessary steps have been taken to make it safe for both staff and customers. Social distancing applies and no dogs are currently allowed due to government guidelines.

For hundreds of years, The Talbot has been a feature of Stow-on-the-Wold’s picture-perfect market square. This historic old coaching inn dates back to the fifteenth century and spreads over two floors with a bar, restaurant, fireplace and small courtyard and an upstairs function room that can accommodate up to 30. It’s a Wadworth pub with a selection of five real ales on offer alongside a menu of homemade pub food which is available at lunch and dinner daily (and throughout the day at weekends). Popular dishes include the Breaded Brie with cranberry dip and mixed leaves to start and mains such as Pan-fried seabass served on a bed of saute potatoes, cherry tomatoes, red onion and wilted spinach with a balsamic glaze. Steaks, lasagne, pies and fish & chips feature too and there are plenty of special offers running throughout the week on the food and drink.

Just bought a holiday home in Stow and went to The Talbot for pub meal.Way exceeded expectations great home made food ,fantastic friendly service and also quick...my husband hates waiting! Steak and ale pie was superb as was lasagne. Would highly recommend and the landlord was really welcoming.

Excellent home made fresh pub food. Very good service and well organised re Covid. We often eat here when in Stow. Good selection of drinks, nice fire. Maybe it’s our age but this is just like good pubs used to be. Proper ham they’ve obviously cooked and carved in house. Everything is clearly cooked to order .

I don’t normally write reviews but felt like I should me and my partner were not hoping for much going off the reviews on here and trip adviser but decided to give the Talbot a try, we were very surprised,, their very Covid safe constantly sanitising hands, card machines, tables and even the chairs which I haven’t seen anywhere else so we felt very safe,. I had fish and chips and my partner had the steak and ale pie both we’re delicious and my partner said it was the tastiest pie he’s ever had, I would absolutely recommend booking in advance as they seemed to turn away so many tables as it was constantly full, we both enjoyed our time at the Talbot and will be back when we’re next in the area.

We booked the Talbot for lunch after reading the positive Trip Advisor reports... And we were disappointed. It was OK... But no more than that. We had a fish and chips, two pies and a salad. It was all fine.....just nothing exceptional. The staff were very Covid safe, but at the expense of any atmosphere in the place. I'm sure we could have done better in Stow tbh.

Staying in stow on the wold. So booked for Sunday lunch, food and service was really good. But couldn’t believe that they actually charge you £2.50 for extra gravy for your meal. Queried it but was told it was on the menu. Never heard anything like it.

This has long been the favourite place when visiting Stow and despite all the challenges it did not disappoint. Somehow the staff manage to remain cheerful and positive and our steak and chips were delicious and as we remembered from previous visits. The onion rings are the best anywhere! Of course one can't give maximum marks for atmosphere in these 'distanced' times but it stays at the top of our list.

We had a pleasant dinner here in late September. The pub was clearly taking COVID seriously, with the staff wearing masks and tables well spaced etc. Food was decent as well.

I regret to say that I can’t agree with the reviews below. Our lunch at the Talbot was disappointing. Even making allowances for the difficulties of running the restaurant during Covid, the food, atmosphere and service were poor. The loos were not clean and had water all over the floor and the service was perfunctory and reflected a lack of Covid training. All three dishes we ordered were bland and made up made with the cheapest of ingredients, the worst of which were spread in place of butter, cheap flabby bacon in the salad and a highly processed chocolate cake. As a major hospitality supplier in a town so popular with tourists, the Talbot needs to pull its finger out and try harder. A cheery welcome, fresh/home made food and attention to detail are not difficult things to achieve. Other restaurants and cafés are managing it even in these difficult times.

Booked a table for a meatless roast on a Sunday. Really well organised, greeted at the door and asked to sanitise our hands, they already had our details from the booking so seated us at table and took our order for drinks and meals. The roast was really lovely, cracking roast potatoes and the veg was all cooked really well, not soggy like some you get. Finished off with Apple and blackberry crumble and custard which was delicious! Would definitely visit again.
