About The Underground

The Elephant Underground opened in 2024 adding an exciting new location to Shrewsbury’s dining and nightlife scene. This cocktail bar and Mexican restaurant is housed in spectacular converted cellars just off Mardol and is open Tuesday to Saturday with a late bar until 1am at weekends. The menu, which is entirely gluten free, offers loads of choice with Small Plates, Tacos, Loaded Nachos, Wings & Fried Chicken and Messy Fries. There’s also Bottomless Brunch every Friday and Saturday from 12 noon to 6pm and a regular Quiz Night and Open Mic night.

My boyfriend is lactose and coeliac so we thought we would check out the restaurant for his birthday. We both ordered burgers whilst his friends got tacos. The tacos were expensive for the portion size but the burgers were really nice. We had a lovely waiter and we were given a lovely corner to sit. They service was really good and the gluten free burgers were lovely, wouldn't even know they were gluten free! Overall, a great experience

We chose this restaurant as I am coeliac and the menu is fully gluten free which is fantastic, however I do feel there is a bit more training to be done regarding this. The server we had must have been very new to the restaurant / serving in general as when we placed orders she kept saying ‘what’s that?’ And ‘is that a cocktail?’ When I ordered my drinks and food. This sort of thing is quite worrying as someone with a dietary requirement if the server is unclear on what the items on the menu are. She also kept trying to upsell us drinks when our glasses were full. While the food was incredibly well presented, and there was a lot of variety, we were underwhelmed by flavour and portion size. As many reviews state, we had to order more food to fill us up, and we felt the tacos were too expensive for what you got. The atmosphere was nice and I enjoyed the music. Service was hit and miss as we had to go searching for someone for our bill. The toilets were unfortunately quite dirty which was off putting.

The setting was nice. The service was good. The food was poor at best. The prawns were undercooked. When we fed this back to the staff, we were told the chef did not agree and they were ‘cooked enough’ The potatoes were cold but tasted nice. The coating on the chicken tenders tasked like raw flour. There was too much salt on the rim on the cocktail glass which resulted in the drink being overpowered by salt and made the end undrinkable. All of this was feedback to the staff but they didn’t seem to care. Generally a really disappointing experience.

Where do I start waited 30 mins for drinks on arrival waited 10 mins for 3 more guests had to ask waiting staff for drinks for them another 20 mins food order was taken 40 mins for starters another 40 mins for mains had to ask for more drinks !!!!!! Table was booked at 6 left at 9.45 there was only another 3 ppl on the restaurant Then a bill of £343 pounds for 10 ppl Considering it’s a new restaurant absolutely awful

The food was really tasy, but extremely small portions so not great value for money. Our waitress was lovely. However a different waiter came to the table at 9pm and asked if we'd like anything else, we asked to see a dessert menu only to be told the kitchen was closed. No more to do he then got his mop and bucket and started mopping round us. We won't go back

Fantastic selection of gluten free food which caters for all tastes, not just Mexican, which all tasted amazing. All the family enjoyed the evening, and the Server was very attentive and helpful. A lovely setting in the cellars but we probably chose a quieter night. We'll be back, thank you for a lovely evening!

I booked for a small group of us to have a meal and drinks, because I’ve been before and loved the food. Unfortunately, due to numerous large parties it took over an hour for food to come and no one had informed us there would be a delay. We understand it happens but we were starving, no appetisers or even just some nibbles were offered. The food and drinks were great when they came, it was just a little overlooked this time with service and communication.
