About Waggon and Horses

The Waggon & Horses at Matley is a warm and friendly family-run local with an emphasis on good, home-cooked food. It's situated at the top of what's known locally as the deep cutting, on the Mottram road between Stalybridge and Glossop. Originally built in 1663 as a farmhouse, it's been a tavern since 1789 and was first known as the Sandmill Inn. Today it has a separate restaurant and bar area and a covered and heated garden space. The menu is an extensive traditional pub menu running alongside specials and the popular Sunday Lunch menu. The Waggon & Horses is open every day, both lunchtimes and evenings, and can also cater for small parties and functions.

Had a lovely meal with friends on Easter Monday. We all really enjoyed what we had. One had the garlic mushrooms, two had the prawn cocktail. Then for main one had the fish and chips, nice crunchy batter and chunky chips. Two of us had the thai green veg curry, one with added chicken. You could half rice and chips which was good.

I've had a few meals at the Wagon in the last year and they've all been lovely. The smaller portions / senior citizens menu is excellent - the food is top quality and the size is just right and it's really reasonably priced. The staff are always really friendly and accommodating. The management has done an excellent job with the outdoor area as well, it's a lovely addition.

Service was good, nice atmosphere Steak Caesar salad was a full bowl of lettuce, some tomatoes, limited parmesan and 3 small thin pieces of steak , not great for the price

My husband and myself along with two friends came for lunch. We all had the offer of three courses for £17. Excellent service food delicious and plenty of it saying it was for smaller appetites. Will certainly come again when in the area. The only downside was that we had to wait awhile for our food.

I write every single time we come here, now we're back. Went slightly downhill some time ago and we stopped coming.... We're back and so is the Waggon. Great food, great staff, great service. What's there not to like ? Only way to find out is to come and try it folks

Hi,first time here and it won't be the last, had lovely lunch opted for the jumbo fish and chips and it was the best I've had in many many years. Staff very friendly and chatted to one for a while about the place itself and sounds brilliantly run,I will be back as they say to try the brisket pie (yummy). Thanks and see you soon.

Food lovely off the senior menu and relaxing to catch up with friends. Unfortunately the service was a bit too slow, we had to ask if we had been forgotten. Order taken within 10 minutes of us sitting down which was fine but 40 minutes later we still hadn’t had our meals and others around who had ordered after us were served.
