About The Wild Boar Inn, Grill & Smokehouse

The Wild Boar is one of the Lake District’s finest and oldest Windermere hotels. You’ll be welcomed with friendly faces, traditional wood beams, individually styled rooms and a warming open fire. This country inn is bursting with character and offers plenty of ‘cosy corners’. The inn adopts its name from the local legend of Sir Richard de Gilpin, who courageously fought and killed a fierce wild boar. Set amongst the picturesque Gilpin Valley, this is the perfect retreat for couples, families and especially dog owners. Head chef Dylan Evans presents his passion for aromatic flavours, he has designed a menu which pairs classic favourites with an international twist. Dishes are popular among locals and guests alike. Dylan takes much inspiration from his time spent in the Middle East and his personal connection to Italy. He prides himself on creating colourful, flavoursome dishes to excite your palette. The Wild Boar is also well-known for its Alternative Afternoon Tea which changes seasonally but boasts favourites such as pork pies, Yorkshire puddings filled with roast beef and pork scratchings. In the bar, try a range of house-brewed ales from ‘Mad Pig’ to ‘Blonde Boar’. Stay in one of 34 individually designed rooms which combine traditional style with contemporary touches, various rooms boast views over the fells, beautiful copper baths or wood burning stoves; all rooms have LCD TVs and luxurious beds. Whether a resident or a day guest, take a stroll through 72 acres of private woodland, situated behind the Inn, and explore the stunning scenery. The woods host our own hidden art trail which highlight the best places to spot local wildlife.

I would like to say a big thank you to the team at Sugarvine who recently recommended this restaurant to me. We had 5 diners looking for great food and wine, and I have to say that none of us were disappointed. The food was of a very high standard, steaks cooked to everyone's preference, which from experience is not always the case in most places! The service was outstanding and even better was that there was absolutely no rush, the table you book for the evening is yours. Whilst we dined in the main restaurant, we ventured in to the bat area also, which was busy but not overwhelming, and again seemed to have a very nice atmosphere. We will definitely be visiting again and would highly recommend to everyone. Please also do not be put off by the name if you are vegan or vegetarian as one of our party is and there were ample choices on the menu.

Stayed the night here for our wedding anniversary recently and a had a great time. Although close to Bowness and Windermere, the Gilpin Valley is off the beaten track on the road to Crook and a real haven. The hotel was lovely – we had a great room with a huge copper bath. The bar has a roaring fire and the restaurant is great if you are a carnivore like me. We chose the rib of beef on the bone. The Wild Boar has its own private woodland too so next morning we had a stroll in the (unexpected) sunshine. Highly recommended for a Lakeland escape.

Dined here with my family including my 3yr old granddaughter who was made very welcome!. The food was absolutely excellent!. I can honestly say I had the best fillet steak I have ever had! The waiters and waitresses were so pleasant and the service was as equally excellent as the food! Lovely food, lovely place, lovely service, well worth a visit!!

Enjoyed an excellent value weekend at the Wild Boar. The hotel was friendly and comfortable. The price was excellent at £59 per person per night inc a hearty breakfast. This also got me a deal on a great dinner of salmon and steak. Very impressed.
