An award-winning gastropub nestled right in the heart of the Forest of Dean, nine miles from Chepstow, eight from Monmouth and 16 from Gloucester. It’s a family affair with chef-patron Steven Jenkins presiding over the two-AA-rosette kitchen with a menu that changes daily based around the best available local produce. Most is sourced from within a 40-mile radius and bread, stocks, syrup, chutney and ice cream are all prepared in-house. You might start with Madgetts Farm pigeon salad with Trealy black pudding bon bon followed by South west salmon with champ potato, crayfish and chive butter sauce. The menu also incorporates comfort food options like burgers and fish & chips as well vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options and their popular Picnic Boards at weekends. There is an extensive wine list as well as local spirits and ciders to complement the food and diners have a choice between the restaurant, bar area or beer garden. In winter the bar, with its open log fire, is a popular choice. And if you fancy staying over in this unspoilt part of the world, there are five newly refurbished guest bedrooms, all ensuite. Relaxed and informal, it's the only two-AA-rosette pub in the Forest of Dean and a great base from which to explore.
