About Y Sgwar

For two decades, the award-winning Y Sgwar restaurant has been welcoming guests to the picturesque market square of Tremadog, a village just outside Porthmadog. Owned and run by David and Lorraine Lloyd-Roberts, it is listed in the Good Food Guide and is a former Welsh Restaurant of the Year. The decor is contemporary with traditional styling, nicely offset against slate floors with an original stone fireplace. Y Sgwar serves modern and traditional dishes with a great emphasis on local produce and is well known for its Welsh Black Steak and lamb dishes. Vegans, vegetarians and all dietary requirements are catered for. As well as the A la carte menu there is also an Early Bird menu and a traditional Sunday roast menu. The restaurant also has two self-catering flats, which offers a perfect destination to explore this beautiful part of Wales. Open Tuesday to Saturday evenings from 5pm, Sunday from 12 noon and now also for Friday lunch too from 12 noon.

I never leave reviews but credit where credits due..Excellent service & the food is the best..Whenever we visit Porthmadog we always book it for our Sunday lunch.It never disappoints.A real hidden gem in North Wales..Thank u Lorraine and the best staff..

Booked online for Sunday lunch. We took advantage of the 3 course offer and it didn’t disappoint. Prawn cocktail for starters, Welsh lamb (obviously) roast dinner with one of the biggest Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever had. Third course was sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce. We also enjoyed a beer and bottle of wine. Food was excellent, service was very prompt and polite and the atmosphere was pleasant as the restaurant was busy. Great value for money and our whole experience was 10/10. Will definitely come here again.

I needed to book early as the restaurant is very popular (not difficult to understand why!). I normally don't provide feedback "after the event" but since you bothered to ask..... Having read so many positive comments about the restaurant and also two local hotels recommending you we were looking forward to a "special" dining experience. Whilst the service and ambiance were very good, we were somewhat disappointed by the meals themselves. Two of us had the chicken and one had the lamb. They were perfectly edible but nothing memorable. The chicken was quite dry and even with the sauce it didn't quite make the mark. Green Vegetables were lovely but the dauphinoise gave the impression of canteen food (mass produced and kept warm). The lamb shank tasted no better than a pre-prepared supermarket product. Sorry to be so negative, but you did ask!
