Best fish pie we've ever tasted and tartar sauce so good we asked them to email us the recipe (which they obligingly did - 10 out of 10 for customer service). But the best thing of all was the price we paid - we happen to have invested in a hi-life card and it was all half-price - best thing we ever bought!

This restaurant is phenomenal. Whether you are looking for the simple but best ever cod and chips or wishing to slip into something more adventurous such as the most perfect John Dory, then this is the place for you. Yes you may have to queue, yes it can be a little cramped, yes the decor may be a little basic but the food is oh so worth it. You will not be disappointed and I guarantee that you will desperately be re-working the diary to plan in the next visit, there is that much choice. And to cap it all, the staff are an absolute delight. We do not eat anywhere else when we are in Whitby and would never even contemplate doing so.

Went on a Friday evening with my partner, was very impressed with the menu, location and decor. My partner ordered a chicken dish but asked for pasta rather than vegetables and potatoes. The older Italian waiter (referred to on an earlier review) barked NO and seemed huffy when we asked if he would check with the chef. He returned and said that the pasta was fine and the meal arrived. One of the other waiters, a young lad from Barnsley, was extremely friendly and helpful but was hustled along by the older guy for simply doing his job (the restaurant was half full at this time). At the end of the evening I got out my Connect card to pay and the guy came over and told me rudely that I could not pay with my card as the machine was broken and told me to go out and find a cashpoint. The rudeness of this (alleged) front of house representative is appalling. He also kept disappearing outside and smoking which doesn't look good if you are dealing with food. Everything else is excellent. (actually there was no music playing which would have added to the atmosphere) My recommendation is to get some customer services training for this chap and get it quick

Not recommended I'm afraid. Unless you like cold tea, soggy chips and good cod spoiled.

I love to be adventurous and try new fish. My partner enjoys sticking to the tried and tested specials or lashing out on skate wings. Both of us are equally satisfied at the Magpie. On a cold November night, after a mere 5 minutes wait, we were seated and the order taken quickly. My grilled turbot [first experience, and priced by weight] was delicious especially served with lemon and chive sauce and a platter of vegetables. Can't wait to go back.

Sent this letter below to the owner of this place after we visited the place in October ……They never even replied….. AVOID THE PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!!! This place is very poor from a customer service point of view and the bar is very cramped and they are trying to do too many things in the one venue! Last week I called your bar and booked a table in the restaurant for Saturday evening and was informed by the guy who took my booking that the “Early sitting, 7-7.30pm was fully booked but he could get me in if I would accept a table at 9-9.30pm sitting”. I was told if I got to the bar at 9pm I would be immediately seated once someone had left from the first sitting. I arrived with my wife at 8.50pm and told the guys behind the bar I had a table booked for 9-9.30 pm and they all said fine no problem have a drink at the bar and we will let you know as soon as a table in the restaurant free. The bar was very busy and lots of people arrived and went through to the restaurant (including two other couples) but we were left in the bar so at 9.20pm we asked one of the girls behind the bar what was happening and she said they were awaiting someone to clear the table and we would be seated as soon as they can. At 9.40pm the guy I had originally introduced myself to when I arrived an hour earlier came over to us and asked if we would accept a table in the bar as the people in the restaurant had still not left and could be another half an hour! At this point my wife said no and given it was close to the time when you stop serving food (10pm) it seemed completely pointless. The guy who we assumed was the bar/restaurant manager then snapped back “It was not his fault that no customers wanted to leave, as it was a Saturday night and people were enjoying themselves”. We looked at each other in disbelief, and immediately pointed out that either you have two sittings or you don’t, and told him we were outraged that we had booked a table on what we thought was the second sitting and it turns out no such arrangements were in place. We visit Whitby several times a year and have eaten at the Moon & Sixpence several times before without booking, but as we were in Whitby this weekend and we like the bar, we thought it was worth taking the late booking an arranging our evening around the later eating time. The bar manager on Saturday night was a complete idiot and totally out of order and more or less indicated it was our fault and considering he works in the service industry had no tact, diplomacy or empathy and we were left stranded. We left the bar but as you can imagine in Whitby at 10pm on a Saturday night you are not going to get into another of the restaurants to eat at this time. In our opinion the service was terrible at the Moon & Sixpence and we want to make you aware of the disappointment of two of your customers at the treatment we received, which ruined our Saturday night. I have been to hundreds of restaurants and bars all over the world and in my experience if you have two sittings and you tell customers situations like the one we experienced with your restaurant on Saturday are avoided. The bar manager was an ignorant, arrogant clown and would be better served working at a fast food restaurant like MacDonald’s and not in a good food restaurant like the Moon & Sixpence. Hopefully if you and your staff are aware of the impact their actions have on the customers you will not lose business and leave customers in such a terrible situation in the future. Perhaps you can look into the matter and find out why we were treated so badly when all we did was book a table at your restaurant. Our evening was completely ruined and we were left with nothing to eat and no where to go, but what annoyed us most of all was the attitude of the staff at your restaurant and the fact that other people were sent straight into the restaurant despite arriving much later than us. If you wish to speak to me about this my mobile number is ********** but feel free to write to me at my home address.

Me and my family visited Whitby yesterday and this restaurant for my mother’s birthday they had travelled from Bradford to our home in Driffield and we decided to have a day out in Whitby. My parents had been to your restaurant in the past and said it was lovely. We placed our order and when it arrived we were all very disappointed with the quality of the food, my mum and husband had the steak pie which they both said had burnt bits and the pie seemed overcooked or maybe was a warm up also there was no veg just chips and some gravy? also the salad my daughter got alongside her fish and chips consisted of 1 small piece of lettuce and lemon? the fish looked large because it was long but very thin hardly no fish?? my 3 sausages did not looked cooked on the inside so were left. such a waste. also 4 teas were ordered but only 2 tea bags in the jar of hot water to share between 4 people the teas cost over £6., the bread and butter was a extra which i did think would have come with the fish and chips not an extra cost. when the bill arrived at £57 i nearly fell of my chair we were all very disappointed one good point was the staff were very polite and helpful we left annoyed at the food and the cost. to be honest i felt like i had just been robbed!

Lunch on Saturday 9th May was excellent. Cheap it isn't, but neither is it over-priced and the portions are spot on (if you want great plates full of food then I suggest you go to any of the growing number of places that are putting quantity over quality). The welcome was friendly and the whole place is spotlessly clean and absolutely charming. This is certainly somewhere we will be visiting again.

During a recent visit to Whitby i stumbled upon this hidden treasure. Myself and Grandma were most amazed by the pleasant smells coming from the restaurant. On arrival outside i was greeted by two plastic dolls. Inside however i was met by the restaurant manager a certain Lisa Notley who showed me to my rather plain wooden bench. As seen on the website this had a maritime feel and Grandma started to reminisce about the merchant navy. Lisa looked after us with drinks and then showed us the chalkboard menu. She seemed a little distracted and when asking for fish and chips she was confused seeming she didn't know the restaurant did them. A little disconcerting considering its a fish and chip shop. I was reassured when io saw through the kitchen at the master fryers at work. doing a merry jig as they battered and crisped the fish. Looking round i chuckled at the billy bass fish guarding an empty mayo bucket of tips. Obviously Lisa had been pulling in the pennies. All in all a fantastic visit and will definitely be coming back. Well done Lisa Notley!!!!!!

lovely atmosphere , we enjoyed a really lovely meal, one of the more expensive eateries in Whitby but worth it for a special occasion etc. Varied choice on menu and the food was amazing, really tasty and well presented. Also nice just to pop in for a cocktail or coffee with lovely view of the harbour.

Worth the 20 mins wait!!! We've visited this restaurant several times and by 'eck does it get better every time. On our last visit we plumped for the traditional fish 'n chips. Huge portion, would have been a shame to leave any!! If you have got a room left, try their homemade chocolate truffles, bring on the heart attack!
