I am sorry to say that the Magpie restaurant must have too much custom; because even before being seated, and whilst waiting for a table the reception staff were offhand and terse and offensive in their treatment of waiting customers. A real 'us and them' approach. In view of this we refused to eat there, walked out and went down the road to the Moon and Sixpence. What a turn up for the books, and what a find.

Absolutely the best fish and chips in the world - eaten there when I lived in Wales, then Leeds, Newcastle and now York. Best time to eat is early on - around 12 noon - if you go later it gets less consistent. Might be a bit pricey but the portions are large! Would recommend it thoroughly!

Having been a visitor to Whitby for over 35 years I feel ashamed that last night 4/8/07 was my first visit to the Magpie. Queued for 30 mins to get a table but well worth the wait. Went for the 'small' portion of cod, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter plus 2 pots of proper tea. Absolutely fantastic. I have put down 'pricey' which it is if you compare to average chippies but this is well worth the extra cost. Service first class. will be back soon, going to try the Haddock next time.

Had a fantastic meal at Estbek House in Sandsend, it was our wedding anniversary and we wanted to book something really special; there website seemed to fit the bill and the menu seemed like we both would be happy (my wife likes seafood & I don’t) - also read that they were reviewed by the Teligraphe and the Times. Had eaten at other local placed before, always enjoying our meals - but sometimes feeling a little rushed. This was very different; we were greeted as we walked by everyone saying hello - the kitchen looks divine; since costing me a lot in having our kitchen redone! We were then got two glasses of a pink sparkling, along with the menus. After we ordered we were shown to our table, by the window with a fantastic view, the waitress came over and decanted our wine, explaining the owners had some of the wines specially shipped over, quite a rare treat, and not over costly at £23. The starters (a bubble and squeak basket filled with mushrooms) were delicious, my main (Shiraz Steak; again the waitress said another idea they picked up while visiting the vineyard our wine came from - cooked to perfection; mind you I could not work out why I did not get a streak knife, until I cut into it that was - it was like soft butter!) My wife had a seafood selection, ½ Lobster, Mornay & Halibut, commenting that the Halibut was the nicest she had ever tasted, we were both happy! Again the desserts & coffee’s were superb, the staff were so kind and chatted with us, even asking where we were staying and recommending places to visit. We managed to try a few old Armagnac’s and suddenly realised how late it was, we had spent all evening at the restaurant, not once did we feel rushed - and the restaurant was full. The food was superb, the wine divine but most of all the staff were friendly. They say on the site ‘leave as fiends’ - we did! We have a weekend break booked later in the year, guess where we are stopping! Enjoy, we did!

As a family we have visited this restaurant many times. The quality of the food is superb, and the presentation is of an equal standard. I wouldn't call it a cafe as such; as this conjures up an idea of greasy spoon. The decor is traditional with a maritime theme. There is another quite famous cafe restaurant a little down the street where the queues are infamous. i have also eaten there. I would advise that the staff on the occasions I have visited have been rude and unhelpful, the food is average and the queues are unreasonable and, in my opinion, unwarranted. Visit the Quarterdeck on your next visit to Whitby and I am sure you will enjoy the food and the views out to sea.

Trenchers is simply a class above the rest! The meal was more expensive than in the take-aways around town, but it was well worth the extra. Greeted at the door we were shown to the bar where we ordered a bottle of wine from their list - which covers all tastes from house wines through to Dom Perignon. We were then shown to our table where our waitress took our order with a pleasant smile. We decided upon sharing a locally caught lobster as a starter, before indulging in traditional Fish & Chips (1 Haddock and 1 Plaice); the lobster was divine and the fish was pure white and melted on the tongue. My wife was completely full but I managed to find room for a home-made Sticky Toffee Pudding with Ice-Cream; again I was not disappointed. The meal was fantastic, service cheerful and attentive to all our needs. Did I forget to mention the restaurant decor, all leather seating with marble tables & I noticed they have won a national award for their toilet facilities - with baby changing facilities in the gents and aftershaves available for use no wonder my wife disappeared into the ladies for a pampering session. I would rate this as a 9.5 / 10 experience - If in the area - ITS A MUST VISIT!!

It's quite twee inside, quite cramped and not wheelchair/pushchair-accessible at all. There are nearly always queues outside here. Now I know why. It's more pricey than your average seaside fish & chip restaurant, but the food is outstanding - and of mammoth porportions. Great fish, but also does seafood salads, low fat, & kids meals etc. The puddings are also fantastic - real comfort food. It was worth the wait; but you can also book in advance.

Ditto's is a "FIVE STAR" restaurant for both the food and the peaceful, intimate atmosphere. Every trip to Ditto's is a memorable experience and you cannot resist returning again and again. If you are planning a trip to Whitby it is well worth booking a table at Ditto's-you will not be disappointed.

Mmmmmmm! Lovely cakes!! We've stopped at Sandersyard twice now and the food was excellent. The staff are really helpful and 'kid friendly'. Would recommend a visit, even if just for coffee and cake!
