It's safe to say there's nowhere in Manchester quite like West Didsbury's Crazy Wendys for a lively night out. Owner Crazy Wendy is an Elvis fanatic and at weekends she belts out classics from Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and The King himself to a packed dining room. It's a favourite with local celebrities and booking is a must - so much so that they have bought next door and expanded the restaurant to accommodate 150 covers. Formerly the Thai E-Sarn Classic, Crazy Wendys is open for lunch Tuesday to Friday and dinner seven days a week and if you park in the nearby hospital car park and give your ticket to the staff, they will pay. The chefs come from five-star hotels in Bangkok as well as the a la carte there are banquet menus and an outside catering service. Mae Gaew in Knutsford is a sister restaurant.

The award-winning Folk Café Bar on Didsbury's Burton Road is an elegant venue that attracts all age groups. It picked up the 'Best Coffee Bar & Casual Dining' award at the 2009 Manchester Food & Drink Festival and serves fresh, home-made food from 10am right through until 11pm, Tuesday to Sunday. The eclectic décor runs the gamut from understated luxury through to the rough and ready with gilded wallpaper, wooden flooring rescued from a school gym and palm trees adorning the entrance - no surprise then that the owner comes from a design background. Folk Café Bar can seat 36 inside - some in private booths - and a similar number outside and serves a wide range of healthy dishes that will appeal to meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. There are salads, deli and mezze boards, home-made burgers, hot and cold sandwiches and an all-day breakfast served until 4pm. There is also a good selection of wines.available and full wifi internet access. At weekends, the mood changes in the evening when there's a DJ playing chill-out music.

A fixture on Didsbury's Burton Road since 1987, Great Kathmandu is one of the oldest Nepalese restaurants in the Manchester area. Right on the corner of Lapwing Lane and Burton Road, the 80-cover restaurant has recently been refurbished and has large bay windows looking out onto the street. Head Chef Chandra Kumar KC along with Chef Dhurba Dangol cooks authentic Nepali dishes that have been passed down through the generations and all pastes, spices, paneer and yoghurt are produced in-house by Chandra himself. Specialities include the Chandane Dry Fry, succulent pieces of chicken or lamb cooked with herbs and spices in traditional Nepalese style and the fiery Chicken Khorsani, cooked with fresh green chillies, ginger and spices and one not for the faint of heart. Their Murgi Masala (for two) requires 24 hours notice and is a whole chicken marinated in a special sauce, cooked with spices and served with biryani. All the Indian classics are also available on the menu and most of the fish and meat dishes can be cooked as vegetarian dishes. Great Kathmandu is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and has been picked by the Observer as one of the best Indian restaurants in the UK and features in the Hardens guide.

This Didsbury restaurant specializes in regional Chinese cooking and - as the name would suggest - speciality teas. There are more than 15 different varieties to choose from, some with medicinal properties, including Eight Treasure, Rosy Flowers and Pu'Er Tea. The food is MSG-free and the stir fries here use less sauce making Green Tea Restaurant a healthier option overall. Fans of spicy food will appreciate plenty of Szechuan options such as Stir-fry beef with green chilli and Chilli chicken with Chinese peppercorns. House specialities include their Sizzling baby potatoes with soy bean sauce and black pepper. The restaurant is fully licensed and is open for lunch Sunday to Friday and dinner seven days. Green Tea Restaurant also offers a 'Ready To Wok' service providing fresh ingredients for stir-fry meals that you can prepare at home.

The Gurkha Grill in West Didsbury is one of the few restaurants in the north where you can enjoy authentic Nepalese food. Owners Neil and Raj worked together in Nepal in the 1980s and it's now more than a decade since they opened the Gurkha Grill. Recently refurbished and expanded to 150 covers, it is now one of the most popular venues on trendy Burton Road, attracting a varied clientele. The chef is one of Manchester's leading curry chefs and the menu features a familiar range of north Indian classics as well as a wide choice of Nepalese dishes such as Sandheko, a spicy salad. Lobster and game also feature. The Gurkha Grill can also provide a buffet-style outside catering service.

Istanbul Grill is one of the latest additions to the burgeoning Didsbury restaurant scene. It's located in the heart of Didsbury Village and the owner has 30 years in the business with 18 of them as head chef at Café Istanbul in the city centre. Istanbul Grill's food is a fresh and modern take on Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine with everything halal. Lamb features prominently on the menu and most dishes are either charcoal grilled or oven baked in the traditional Turkish way.

Award-winning chef Jem O'Sullivan (formerly of the Lincoln and the Lime Tree) returned to his Didsbury roots to set up Jem & I. Cuisine is Modern European with everything made fresh daily on the premises and Jem's passion for food shines through. Housed in a former bank, the restaurant is open 7 days for lunch and dinner (except Monday lunch) and was refurbished and extended a couple of years back with modern, sleek surroundings and an upstairs gallery overlooking the new bar and kitchen area.

The Didsbury La Tasca - one of five in the Greater Manchester area - is a big favourite with local diners for both lunch and dinner. The large, two-storey building stands out proudly and the interior is equally impressive with its wooden floors, rustic Spanish artefacts and spiral staircase leading to the upper floor. The menu features all the Spanish favourites you would expect including paella, lots and lots of tapas dishes to share and plenty of fine Spanish wines. With the Spanish music accompanying your meal, you could almost be in Spain. There are regular Spanish party nights and theme nights organized here too.

This former West Didsbury railway hotel has transformed itself in recent years from biker hang-out to quality gastropub. It's a huge, airy characterful building with restaurant, bar, library, TV lounge and -- the most recent addition -- an all-year-round al fresco bar with canopies and heaters. Hidden away in a row of cottages down Didsbury's only cobbled street, No. 4 Dine & Wine opened in November 2005. From a modern British base, the menu travels far and wide, incorporating flavours from around the globe. Mains range from traditional dishes like the Slow roast belly of pork with Bury black pudding, mash and grain mustard sauce to Sea bass with potato rosti, baby spinach with tomato, olive and basil dressing and vegetarian options which include Filo pastry croustade of leek, pear, roquefort and walnut . No. 4 Dine & Wine is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday brunch from 11am to 2pm. It's run by husband-andwife team Paul and Nina Burton who are always on hand to offer a friendly welcome.

Rhubarb is situated in the foodie haven of Burton Road in West Didsbury and was established in 2002 by husband and wife Mark and Lisa Ramsden. Mark, a chef of twenty years experience, has created a contemporary and eclectic menu which has defined this independent restaurant. Lisa manages the front-of-house team and provides a warm welcome to customers old and new. Rhubarb is recommended in the Michelin and Hardens guides and is open for dinner seven nights a week and offers lunch from 1pm on Sunday. It's perfect for a romantic dinner for two or a business gathering for 20 and is also available for private hire, weddings, christenings and birthdays.

Sajna Indian Kitchen is situated in the heart of Didsbury and is the exclusive takeaway arm of a group of south Manchester restaurants that was founded nearly 20 years ago.
