Delicious local steak and the best pizza this side of RomaWhat a great little restaurant Famiglia is, and how refreshing these days to eat in a family-run Italian restaurant. Lewes high street has a proliferation of chain Italian restaurants, but my friend and I were keen to sample something less ‘predictable’. So we headed to Famiglia, slightly tucked away on Market Street behind the Needlemakers. We went on the recommendation of a neighbour who had rated it because they use locally-sourced ingredients and the atmosphere is cosy. We were not disappointed - and enjoyed a really delicious and reasonably-priced lunch. From the specials board I chose a juicy sirloin steak (from a local farm in Barcombe, the delightful owner told us), and my friend had the pizza primavera. She visits Italy a lot to see family and claimed her pizza was actually better than many she’s tasted in Italy! We shared puds: the mousse al cioccolato was to die for, and the lemon tart was zingy and succulent with proper vanilla ice cream, the sort that brought back memories of Italian holidays. The service was attentive and friendly without being rushed or pushy. I would really recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for authentic, freshly prepared Italian food in a convivial setting. We’ll certainly return when we can to sample their other dishes.
