The Bird In hand enjoys a rural location in the lovely village of Guilden Sutton, just three miles out of Chester. Phoenix-like, the pub has just been given a new lease of life. New management have cleaned the pub up and introduced a new food offering to include modern takes on pub classics made using as much locally sourced, seasonal produce as possible. Expect a warm welcome, open fire and comfortable surroundings. There is a beer garden for al fresco eating and drinking and a facility for live events and music in a large marquee. The bar offers four different cask ales from local micro breweries and a good selection of wine by the bottle and glass. The seasonal menus change regularly and feature the best of what is available; plenty of seafood and fish including Lobster in the summer and game in the autumn. The ribeye steak and T Bones are from exceptional beef that is properly aged. Regulars on the menu are the classics done in a house style such as the beer battered Haddock and homemade chips, the homemade burgers and steak and ale pie. There are more complex dishes available such as the starter of pan seared Scallops with black pudding and celeriac puree with pan glaze or the main of confit duck leg with nutmeg mash and red wine gravy. Sunday sees traditional roasts with all the trimmings and a vegetarian option.

Chester’s riverside Blue Moon Café is a real institution, attracting an eclectic clientele ranging from kids right through to pensioners. The Barn is an opulent and grand conversion of a 400-year-old dairy farm that's situated in the beautiful Cheshire countryside, just outside Chester. It's run by David Hughes who previously managed the restaurant at the Chester Grosvenor. There is an al fresco area for up to 50 diners and the land adjacent contains a field for marquee events and a small campsite. Foodwise, all ingredients are locally sourced and seasonal. As much as possible is made in-house and all dishes are cooked to order. There is a childrens menu and Gluten Free food is available. The British menu features pub classics, fillet and rib eye steaks and a great Sunday lunch, whilst the Italian menu has a large choice of Pizza and Pasta as well as mains like Cod loin wrapped in Parma ham and seafood risotto. The wine list has been well chosen and it features wines by the glass, twenty six whites and reds, two Champagnes and two dessert wines.
