1539 Restaurant & Bar at Chester Racecourse gives you the opportunity to enjoy contemporary British cooking in breathtaking modern surroundings. The glass-fronted venue is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and boasts wonderful views out over the racecourse, in particular from a decked area which is perfect for al fresco dining during the summer months. The menus utilise the best local produce from the surrounding region including Vale of Clwyd beef, Goosnargh chicken and duck, morning-fresh vegetables from Cheshire farms and herbs from the 1539 herb garden. Barlounge is a lively cocktail bar and restaurant located in Chester city centre. Open daily from 12noon until late, you can drink, dine and socialise in informal surroundings. Relax on a comfy sofa in the bar area, catch up with friends on the sun terrace (heated and covered in winter) or eat in the restaurant where the menu offers something to suit everyone, including vegetarian options. Private hire is available for weddings and corporate functions. Barlounge picked up the Best Bar award at the 2008 Northern Hospitality awards.

The Bird In hand enjoys a rural location in the lovely village of Guilden Sutton, just three miles out of Chester. Phoenix-like, the pub has just been given a new lease of life. New management have cleaned the pub up and introduced a new food offering to include modern takes on pub classics made using as much locally sourced, seasonal produce as possible. Expect a warm welcome, open fire and comfortable surroundings. There is a beer garden for al fresco eating and drinking and a facility for live events and music in a large marquee. The bar offers four different cask ales from local micro breweries and a good selection of wine by the bottle and glass. The seasonal menus change regularly and feature the best of what is available; plenty of seafood and fish including Lobster in the summer and game in the autumn. The ribeye steak and T Bones are from exceptional beef that is properly aged. Regulars on the menu are the classics done in a house style such as the beer battered Haddock and homemade chips, the homemade burgers and steak and ale pie. There are more complex dishes available such as the starter of pan seared Scallops with black pudding and celeriac puree with pan glaze or the main of confit duck leg with nutmeg mash and red wine gravy. Sunday sees traditional roasts with all the trimmings and a vegetarian option.

Chester’s riverside Blue Moon Café is a real institution, attracting an eclectic clientele ranging from kids right through to pensioners. Apart from the great location and restaurant quality dining ranging from traditional British classics to Med, Middle Eastern, Asian and Tex-Mex dishes, one of the main draws is the interior décor. It’s a real 1950s throwback, an American diner filled with memorabilia, including a fab Rocola Bubbler jukebox filled with tunes from the 1950s and 1960s and TV monitors showing original shows from that era. From Thursday to Saturday at 6pm it becomes Bistro Blu, a traditional French Bistro offering all the favourite dishes on a full French/Mediterranean menu at only £14.95 for two courses. The Blue Moon Café is open every day from 10 am (9am on weekends) til 5pm or 5.30pm. It’s also fully licensed, so apart from the great coffee you can choose from a range of wines and bottled beers.

Fiesta Havana brings a piece of Cuba to Chester city centre. It’s located right on Watergate Street in former wine cellars and with its bare brick walls and trendy lighting it’s a popular choice with the twenty- and thirty-something crowd. Open from noon every day until 1am or 2am, it’s the place to go for late night eating and drinking with the full menu served until 11pm and tapas available right though to closing time. Popular menu choices include sizzling fajitas and paella and to accompany the food there’s a great choice of mocktails, cocktails, shooters, beers, wines and – of course – mojitos. Set in a baroque Chester mansion house dating back to the seventeenth century, Michelin star chef Richard Philips has come to Oddfellows waving the flag for British Cuisine. “We will source the best local, seasonal produce for Oddfellows and show everybody how ‘great’ a British menu can be,” says Richard. Dining options include The Pantry, an all-day bistro with contemporary yet slightly eccentric design which is the perfect meeting place for a quick bite or a coffee and The Brasserie, where you can enjoy delectable food in an environment that exudes a relaxed sophistication and charm. Oddfellows is also one of the few venues in Chester that offers al fresco dining and drinking facilities. Nestled in the Peckforton hills in the village of Higher Burwardsley near Tattenhall on the outskirts of Chester, The Pheasant Inn dates back to the 1600’s and has always been an inn. The Cheshire sandstone buildings house 12 en suite rooms both in the main building and the stable wing. Centrally located on Lower Bridge Street in Chester, Ruan Orchid was the first Thai Restaurant to open in Chester. A traditional Thai restaurant housed in a 17th Century Grade II listed building, the restaurant is spread over two floors and can seat a total of 80 diners. Stuart’s Table at the Farmer’s Arms in Huxley is a Cheshire country pub that dates back to the 16th century and legend has it that it served as a field hospital during the Civil War. These days it’s very much a foodie haven with a larger-than-life landlord – Stuart Turner – who has an absolute passion for food. Along with head chef Aaron Totty, they have put together a seasonal British menu with steaks a speciality. The Barn is an opulent and grand conversion of a 400-year-old dairy farm that's situated in the beautiful Cheshire countryside, just outside Chester. The setting and the building lend themselves perfectly for a wedding or large corporate event as well as an intimate and romantic dinner. The front of the building has a helipad and landscaped lawns which feature life-size sculptures of cows, a feature that echoes the quirky elegance within. The interior has been perfectly restored retaining the original features and charm including the wooden vaulted ceiling and revealed red brick walls. The contemporary open plan dining room is furnished to a very high standard with chandeliers, striking designer furniture, bold wall coverings and a large bar and terrace area. Dining is split level with two mezzanine dining rooms allowing a versatile space to create private dining or large parties. The food here focuses on the wealth of local produce surrounding the Barn and there are monthly changing seasonal modern British menus. Lunch offers gourmet sandwiches and salads, risottos and more robust dishes like crispy belly pork with Chorizo mash and rib eye steak with Bearnaise and hand cut chips. In the evening you can enjoy starters such as terrine of Partridge with apple celeriac remoulade and parsnip and honey cream. Mains reveal Cheshire Porterhouse steak with oxtail Stroganoff and bone marrow rice or seared wild sea bass on broccoli risotto with ginger and caramel sauce. The desserts are equally extravagant and the 58-bin wine list offers something for every occasion including 9 Champagnes and a superb cocktail and mocktail list. Situated on the Nantwich Road in the village of Broxton just outside Chester, The Olive Grove is a newly renovated old pub that has been re-born as an Italian restaurant with traditional bar. It's run by David Hughes who previously managed the restaurant at the Chester Grosvenor. The Contemporary and smart interior features a bar serving cask ales and continental lagers and two dining areas that serve both a traditional British pub menu and a contemporary Italian menu. There is an al fresco area for up to 50 diners and the land adjacent contains a field for marquee events and a small campsite. Foodwise, all ingredients are locally sourced and seasonal. As much as possible is made in-house and all dishes are cooked to order. There is a childrens menu and Gluten Free food is available. The British menu features pub classics, fillet and rib eye steaks and a great Sunday lunch, whilst the Italian menu has a large choice of Pizza and Pasta as well as mains like Cod loin wrapped in Parma ham and seafood risotto. The wine list has been well chosen and it features wines by the glass, twenty six whites and reds, two Champagnes and two dessert wines. The recently refurbished Watergate Grill is located on the upper rows of Watergate Street Chester. This modern, buzzy Anglo-American restaurant affords the combination of a NYC Steakhouse, a touch of southern hospitality Texas style and the best of British values when it comes to sourcing and quality of produce. Darren and his team ensure that everything is made to order here without taking shortcuts, the Welsh beef is sourced direct from the farm and hung for 28 days for maximum flavour, even the burgers are made using grass fed, fully traceable beef. Ribs are a signature here and slow roasted to their own recipe and they make their own Chilli, meat balls in tomato sauce and Mexican curry. All the favourite are here; Sizzling Fajitas, Burritos, Nachos, Skins and Shakes. At the weekend they open for lazy breakfasts with bottomless drinks, pancakes, bagels, waffles and muffins. Upstairs at the Grill is a split-level Manhattan style steak house and intimate cocktail bar located in Chester city centre. It’s open daily from 5pm until bedtime and from 12pm on Sundays and although you will find vegetarian options on offer, the main event here is undoubtedly the selection of steaks, all five week dry-aged Welsh Black beef. Choose from Rib Eye (on and off the bone), Sirloin, Fillet (on and off the bone), Rump, Porterhouse and Chateaubriand and match your choice with a selection from the extensive wine list, which caters to all tastes, including vintage champagnes and classed-growth Bordeaux. A small private dining room is available for small celebrations or business meetings and the whole restaurant is available for hire for weddings and corporate functions.
