The Distressed Sailor is on the old Egremont Road heading out of Whitehaven. It’s a 200-year-old inn as the horse ties on the wall attest and new owners are making a real go of serving good-quality traditional British/Cumbrian cuisine. Steak and ale pie, garlic chicken, liver and onions, Cumberland sausage, sticky toffee and sponge puddings are all popular choices. Both the landlord and landlady have a wealth of experience working in other establishments in the area which they have now brought to bear on their own venture since taking over in 2009. There is a day menu and a night time menu and they can cater for parties and functions either in the pub or with an outside catering service (minimum order 10 people). It’s a family pub as well as being dog-friendly and there are a whole range of activities on during the week. Free wifi internet access is also available.
