Having spent 18 years working in different restaurants around the Bolton area, chef-patron Nick Cullen fulfilled a dream by opening his own restaurant, Nicks, in 2000. The restaurant won the Bolton Evening News Restaurant Of The Year award in 2004 and has an extremely loyal and regular client base. Unprepossessing from the outside, the warm and intimate former terraced house has bags of character and you feel as if you could literally be eating anywhere in the world. The food is paramount here, as you’d expect from a chef-patron who’s passionate about his cooking. The cuisine is best described as English and Continental, decidedly not Modern British, and with more of an old-school appeal to it. Dishes like Chicken Chasseur and Tournedos Rossini feature – a rarity these days. The wine list is the best in Bolton, according to Nick, and keep your eyes peeled for the regular guest wines. Nicks is closed Monday and Tuesday and does a great Sunday lunch. Booking essential at weekends.

Puddleduk in Horwich is the latest venture for the team behind Preston’s popular venues Duk and Pond. Proprietor Andrea Mellon has returned to her roots after a four-year absence as this was her first restaurant venture. The name comes from customers thinking she must be slightly puddles to open a third venue; the duk element meaning food, desire and hunger in different languages. Puddleduk is situated on the main street in Horwich, opposite the Town Hall in the old Co-op building. It has an international, modern and rustic feel with its golden and plum colours and lots of wood. The restaurant has a bar seating area with comfortable and relaxing sofas to use before and after dinner, booth seating for romantic or secluded dining and a spacious main dining area with open kitchen where guests are encouraged to chat with the kitchen staff. The cuisine and ambience are a direct reflection of owner Andrea’s personality and experience which inspires a loyal customer following. The cuisine is ‘bespoke world tapas’ which is exclusive to all three venues and allows you to choose a selection of dishes from all corners of the globe to create your meal. Wines are chosen from around the world to match the food and they even have their own chilli beer. Puddleduk specializes in catering for allergy sufferers, vegetarians and vegans and has been nominated for Gordon Ramsay’s Best Local Restaurant.
