The Romance Restaurant Boat is run by award-winning holiday company Canal Boat Cruises, based in Riley Green Marina near Hoghton. The restaurant boat ‘MV Romance’ offers a dining experience with a difference. The purpose-built restaurant boat is disabled-friendly and takes diners or pre-booked parties for three-hour cruises along the waterways of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The route passes many historic places including Withnell Fold Nature Reserve, the old paper mill, the famous Hoghton Tower where James I knighted the loin of beef Sirloin and on to the lovely hamlet of Wheelton and the Johnson Hillock locks before returning. The restaurant can seat up to 40 diners and the best views are from the boat’s bow where there is a table for up to 12 people. Set three-course seasonal menus use great local produce and offer real value at just £35 per person (£39 evenings) including the cruise. There is a licensed bar and for children under 12 years the cost is half price. A typical menu would feature regional Lancashire cuisine such as homemade leek and potato soup, locally reared sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding, Boatman’s Lancashire new season lamb stew with comforting desserts like chocolate fudge cake or homemade apple pie. The Riley Green Marina has a pub with canalside accommodation called the Boat Yard. All types of function can be catered for including weddings, corporate events and Christmas parties and they have themed nights such as Halloween. The cruises generally depart between 6pm and 7.30pm Fridays and Saturdays and on Sundays at 1pm. There are also Afternoon Cream Tea cruises on Bank Holidays. Canal Boat Cruises is the Red Rose Tourism & Leisure Business of the Year 2013.

Attended a surprise party for my in-laws’ Golden Wedding celebrations and it was a fabulous day out. If I’m honest, I didn’t quite know what to expect but the boat was beautifully laid out with linen-clothed tables, a bar and waiting staff and the whole event went down very well. It’s a very pleasant way to spend three hours, cruising down the canal enjoying a three-course meal (soup, roast beef and Yorkshires, apple pie) and watching the world go by. The marina also has a pub where you can retire to for a drink afterwards (or even stay the night). If you’re looking for a meal with a difference then I would certainly consider the Romance. Muir Sunday 11th September 2011 was our second cruise and dine on the restaurant boat and will definitely not be our last. We treated my husband's parents to celebrate their retirement. It's just absolutely lovely. Sunday lunch with a difference. The food and service is absolutely fabulous. We would highly recommend. Claire
