We booked a table for 4 at short notice and were delighted that we could actually get a table on a Saturday night. We were impressed by the dining area however the food was disappointing. It claims to be modern Mediterranean dining with an emphasis on great British produce. The menu was in actual fact a throwback to the 70's and included steak with pepper sauce, oven chips and quite possibly the smallest portion of veg imaginable; there was no fear of reaching your 5 a day target at this place. The wine list was very poor and the wine was approx £15 per bottle. Whilst I don’t mind paying double for what it would cost in a supermarket (the going mark-up) they were pretty much £2.99 to £5 wines at best. The list was unimaginative and made choosing a bottle difficult. I.e. one of each type of the staple varieties allows no consumer choice. The steaks were a good portion size they were sadly cooked until unrecognisable as a steak, we ordered a rare, a medium and a medium to well done steak and they were all the same! Surely a chef can manage to cook a steak to order. Admittedly we didn't complain and as the service was very good and the staff extremely pleasant I am sure they would have offered us a freshly cooked steak had we brought it to their attention. The restaurant wasn't busy but given that almost every table was celebrating a birthday it seemed a bit more like Frankie and Benny's than a fine dining experience. The pianist who was very good struggled to decide whether he wanted to play his piano too loudly or be a comedian, unfortunately it became a bit irritating. However he was very pleasant even asking guests if they had any requests and I wish I had the effective intelligence to have requested he turn the volume down on his electric piano. In summary the food was below par and if you have an 80 year old aunt with a birthday coming up take her here because she will love it. Don’t expect a romantic intimate evening because you can’t hear your other half shouting above the piano let alone whisper sweet nothings to each other. The bill came to £180 for four 3 course meals with two bottles of wine and two liqueur coffees so about £45 per person so not extortionate but not cheap either and I personally wouldn’t book this restaurant again, but maybe we just went on an off- night.
