Angelo’s in Bradford is a traditional restaurant and pizzeria where the eponymous owner runs the business like a family. He’s been in the restaurant trade for 27 years and has personally trained all of his chefs. Pasta is the Angelo’s speciality with plenty of choices including oven-baked pasta dishes, egg pasta, drumwheat pasta and fresh pasta specials. Linguine alla pescatore bianco – linguine tossed in white wine with olive oil, prawns, cockles, mussels, squid, garlic and chilli -- is a house favourite. There is also a range of 20-odd pizzas as well as beef, chicken, fish and veal mains. Angelo’s is conveniently located in the west end of Bradford, close to the university and the Alhambra Theatre. The restaurant was refurbished three years ago and seats 80, with a bar – Bar Cielo – and waiting area upstairs.

Bradford-born Andrew Bradley learnt his trade at the Michelin-starred Box Tree at Ilkley before a spell as restaurant manager at Clarks Bistro in Bradford in the 1990s. Today he owns and runs two eponymous restaurants in Yorkshire – this his former workplace which he has recently taken over and rebranded and his first restaurant in Huddersfield. Both Bradleys offer a winning combination of clean, contemporary design, accomplished modern British cooking and reasonable prices. Bradleys is open for lunch weekdays and in the evenings Monday-Saturday with an early bird menu available every night. Bradleys also has a successful and well-established outside catering arm which catered for more than 70 weddings in 2007.

Located beside the River Aire, on Ireland Bridge that crosses to Bingley town centre, The Brown Cow is a great choice for real ale and hearty food. Part of the Timothy Taylor stable, you can expect perfectly kept ales with a full range of Tim Taylor available. Inside the pub is warm and welcoming with a large bar, two dining areas and a lounge. Upstairs is a function room which has facilities for up to 50 people. The building used to be a courthouse and it is said that the ghost of Mary Midgley lives in the pub after losing her life for love when she killed herself in the river Aire. A broad menu offers pub classics and some more interesting dishes such as a starter of sauteed Black Pudding tossed with new potatoes, basil and walnuts with a poached egg and mains like the Timothy Taylor Pie and a separate grill menu for steaks, chicken and chops. A specials board features dishes from around the world and Sunday lunch is a busy affair. Open for food Monday-Friday 12-3pm and 5.30-9pm. Saturday 12-9pm and Sunday 12-8pm.

Prashad first opened in Bradford in 1986 but it’s only since 2004 that this Indian vegetarian restaurant has been serving sit-down meals. It’s very much a Patel family affair with mother in the kitchen and father and son managing the restaurant. Royal Eastern at Queensbury is the only Chinese Restaurant in West Yorkshire with a professional singer, Carina, as well as a dance floor, disco and karaoke on request. The Raggalds was originally a staging post for the cloth trade during the Industrial Revolution. Now, after a major refurb and a recent change of ownership, this spacious country restaurant and bar boasts a modern interior complete with stripped wooden floors and a new outside dining area. There’s now more of a focus on food with everything on the traditional pub menu cooked fresh to order and based on local produce. The Raggalds has regular live acts as well as folk and jazz nights every week. It’s also a popular spot for weddings and functions and is just a short drive from Bradford in Queensbury.

The Woodlands Hotel in Oakenshaw is a traditional village pub with food, accommodation and an active programme of weekly events.
