We all had a wonderful time although it was very cold and we had to leave our coats on which I must say this did spoil it a little!!! (It was -10 outside though so a little warmer inside!!!) Dee If you were to take a slight detour from the teeming student area of Liverpool that is Concert square you could be forgiven for thinking you had landed in a swanky bar in Brazil. Alma de Cuba is situated in the former St Peter's Catholic Church on Seel Street right in the heart of Liverpool. Alma boasts a versatile night where they serve food and drinks of all kinds with a Hispanic, Latin American and Cuban combined influence. On entering this spectacular hot spot you do not have to search to discover why its so popular. In fact enter at around five to eleven on a Friday or Saturday and you can see for yourself why. This is 'carnival' and is a popular attraction for the glamorous in Liverpool where the entire bar is adorned with pink and white confetti as salsa dancers entertain at the front of the old alter. The bar area is lavishly decorated and situated beneath a giant chandelier. What's even more impressive and a tad surprising is that the drinks are reasonably priced and the food even more so. The restaurant is positioned above the bar and has an intimate feel, featuring beamed ceilings and rich red velvet decoration all with the underlying influences from the old Church. You can sip a cocktail from their extensive range and perhaps even sneak a peek at the odd celebrity or five. It is not a bar to be missed when out in Liverpool and a perfect place to party in style. Hotspotspotter Six of us ate at Alma de Cuba last Saturday night and had a fantastic time. I had been before but the other two couples we were with hadn't and as our table wasn't ready we were able to go into the bar for a drink first. This certainly has the WOW factor, architecturally it's awesome. When our table was ready we were led to our table upstairs - again WOW. The menu had a great choice, the food was fantastic albeit slightly hot (the ribs) and the service was A1. The only disappointment was the dancers which could have been better dressed (the male) and more varied. However we all had a brilliant night out, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal out in Liverpool. Pp Went along with a large group in early April 08. I agree with the verdict of great food - but from a fairly limited menu. Started with the Chicken Salad (which had me reaching for the water; that's some sauce on it!) followed by medium rare steak. Both excellent. Others had fishcake to start with salmon, also very recommended. Finished with cheesecake, which was a bit of a let-down as although made on the premises, had no real substance. The chairs are low, but comfortable enough you don't notice. On the downside, it's amazingly loud and conversation is out of the question without yelling straight into ears. I needed to make a call, but there was no chance inside, so I tried a staircase and was told it was staff only and got shoved out into the smoking area, where it was raining heavily. The queueing for the club area downstairs made it almost impossible to get back in and you can't take a phone and stand in the lobby. It's also very dark and there's only one gents cubicle for the entire restaurant area. Great grub and the crianza and service was top notch too. But they need to work on the 'atmosphere' - maybe I'm getting old, but spending two hours yelling at my mates over dinner isn't my cup of tea. The Demon Barber
