May 2013 - We visited the Retreat restaurant for the first time and were not over impressed. It is well located, with adequate mid-week parking, which was as well for a rainy evening. There are tables at the front of the restaurant intended for outside dining, but these were rather untidy and detracted from the general appearance, as did the notice by the main door admonishing customers not to leave their cigarette ends lying around! After those first impressions, it was a pleasant surprise to see the attractive cocktail bar and seating area as we entered, which led on to the equally well laid out and spacious dining areas.A young waitress soon introduced herself, then left us to choose from the more than adequate menu. With 10 starters and 11 main courses, plus various grills, salads and pizzas, there is plenty to choose from, with main courses priced from £11.50. What we missed was a menu of sweets, so we decided to limit our order to starters and mains.Including grilled tuna steak in our order, the waitress asked if we wanted it rare, medium or well done, so not wanting rare tuna unless it was absolutely fresh fish, we inquired if it was fresh or frozen – but she didn’t know. Apparently it is frozen, so we didn’t choose rare!Having ordered food and drinks, we noticed that the table setting was let down by paper serviettes rather than linen knapkins, an expense which the restaurant prices should easily justify. We were also soon disturbed by pop music from nearby loudspeakers, totally out of keeping with the restaurant ambiance.Soon served with starters, wine, then main courses, we were pleased in general with the well presented food, and particularly with the sauces and dressings in the dishes. One exception was the grilled lamb, which was rather dry and overdone, possibly reheated.Ending the meal with coffee of various types, we reflected that the restaurant had some way to go for accolades, but with more attention to detail and fresh produce, could be worth revisiting.
