Hamnavoe, meaning safe harbour in Old Norse, lies in the heart of the picturesque, historic town of Stromness, tucked away down an old flagstone lane just beyond the town’s main thoroughfare. It’s a small, intimate and relaxed dining space with only 9 tables. This popular restaurant has been under new ownership since June 2022 and the menu is a modern take on Orkney’s world class seafood and meat, with a fusion of European and Asian flavours and techniques. Expect starters such as Hand-dived Orkney scallops with hazelnut Romesco and mains like Hamnavoe seafood bisque with scallops, saffron potatoes, sea trout and plaice or Slow-braised Orkney beef cheek with buttered polenta, sweetheart cabbage, and salsa verde. There’s also a good selection of drinks with a wine list exclusive to the islands.
