Once the HQ of the Birmingham Canal Company, this magnificent Grade II-listed building on Gas Street has been restored to its former glory and is now home to Bistrot Pierre. The two-floor venue with its exposed brickwork has retained many of its period features, notably the archway under which thousands of boats passed and this has now been reopened with a glass front so passers-by can see the bistrot's wine cellar. There is also a wrought iron staircase and brass handle door, ornately engraved with the number 46, the original sash windows and the tiny doors. The large safe which held all the canal toll money in the 1860s has been renovated into a cosy dining alcove on the second floor. The building's courtyard has been refurbished too to create additional outdoor seating and a two-storey glazed extension boasts more tables with canal views. Bistrot Pierre's 'raison d'être' is great-value French cooking and seasonal menus, combining French bistrot classics such as steak-frites, boeuf bourguignon and crème brûlée with their own take on regional favourites like tarte flambée, confit de canard and pâté de campagne. This relaxed and friendly bistrot with real character is the place to go for any occasion.
