My last two visits to this restaurant have been ruined by the service. Grumpy unfriendly waiters and a 10% compulsory service charge which is not clearly indicated. My last visit was at lunch me and my friends were not offered or told about the lunchtime menu so were forced to order off the main menu, costing us a lot more than the equivalent on the lunch menu, our waiter was very rude and abrupt with us ruining our experience. As a result we didn't want to leave the full 10% as our service was so bad, we were not allowed to leave the restaurant until the full 10% was paid to the waiter that blocked our exit. Utterly terrible behavior, and as a result will never eat here again. Which is a shame as my first visit was totally the opposite

On looking through the very inviting cosy window of La Grotta last week while in Bristol for the day, myself and my husband thought we couldn't go wrong for a delicious italian meal, but we were really disappointed. I ordered cannelloni and it came up really hard and overcooked with hardly any sauce, very basic and bland, I have cooked better at home. My husband ordered seafood spaghetti and it came plain with a couple of olives and prawns, no sauce at all. It was awful. We might have been on the chefs off day but can honestly say the meal was one of the worst italian meals we have had. It was as though they couldn't be bothered to make the meal with any flavour whatsoever. We wont be visiting there again. o points.

We had lunch here today. I love Italian food, especially good Italian food and I was absolutely blown away by the superb quality of the meal. My wife had Penne with a tomato and bacon sauce. Her comment was that this was the best she'd had for years and could easily imagine herself being in Italy while she was eating it. I had Lasagna and I can say that it was the best that I have had since... well actually, probably the best ever. And my daughter (who is gluten intolerant) had a wide choice of food to eat, including gluten-free pasta. We discovered that their sensitivity to this comes from the owner's daughter also being gluten intolerant. This is a family owned, family run restaurant that offered the BEST Italian food and at very reasonable prices. If you adore italian catering, you MUST come here. We will certainly be going back.

We first went to La Grotta may years ago as a young couple, and had a lovely meal. Then we went back when our first child was just 6 months . . . and the very friendly waiter held her while we ate. It was the FIRST break we'd had since she arrived. We've been aboard for 2 years, and return home next week. Our first stop in Bristol will be . . . La Grotta!

Had been meaning to try this restaurant for a while as I? always looking for a good Italian. I found La Grotta to have a warm and cosy surroundings. The food was great and I could tell cooked fresh. The service good considering how busy it was. I was served by a beautiful girl named Grass, Who told me it was a family run business which makes sense as I?e always preferred these kinds of restaurant. Only wished I? tried it sooner.

Have been going to this restaurant since I was at College and now my own children who are at University use it regularly when they are at home - with or without us(or collect takeaway pizzas from them as they claim they are THE BEST). Owner was a waiter there when I first went to the restaurant!! All staff are longstanding - Richard in the kitchen, Augusto, Mario, Poalo, Peter - all great. TOTALLY NON SMOKING RESTAURANT. Pasta is fantastic - the spaghetti bolognaise is famous with an unchanged recipe over the 25 years I have been going there. Hubby loves the Pollo a la Grotto which is like a chicken kiev but stuffed with pate and is on a bed of rice with a redwine sauce.Open from lunchtime straight through for six days a week and for a shorter period of Sundays. Pasta, pizza, steaks, chicken, fish, mixed grills, omelettes - whatever you like you will find something to suit - so you can take granny and the aunties and the toddlers and the teenagers and everyone will be happy. Tell them Kathy and Malcolm sent you!!
La Grotta
Most of the people I?e met in the restaurant over the years have become avid regulars. The "La Grotta" sauce is to die for. And now a No smoking policy! Great intimate club downstairs finishes a party off. Proper job
