Candlelit and cosy, this charming 45-cover Harrogate bistro opened at the back end of 2004 and was awarded an AA rosette in 2007. The food is Modern British with a global influence -- starters range from £4-£6 and might include Seared tiger prawns with a sweet chilli coriander butter sauce; mains are around £12-£18 for dishes such as Char-grilled beef fillet medallions with potato rosti, sweet pepper ratatouille and Madeira jus. With a Michelin star, four AA rosettes and one of the country's best wine lists, the Burlington Restaurant at the Devonshire Arms is one of the north's top destinations for food lovers. The Bolton Abbey estate is in the heart of Wharfedale, near Skipton, and this area is home to some of Yorkshire's most beautiful countryside. Originally a coaching inn, it has been in the family of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire since 1733 and is now a luxury country house hotel with a range of amenities, including its own health spa. Executive Chef Michael Wignall's a la carte and tasting menus are served in one of the Burlington's three rooms, with an ambience ranging from the classic (antique polished tables, fine china and sparkling silver) to the contemporary (the modern conservatory looking out over the Italian garden). Located on Frenchgate, one of Richmond's most picturesque cobbled streets, this former gentleman's residence dates back to the mid-eighteenth century. Completely remodelled and refurbished, it's now a boutique hotel with eight rooms and an AA-rosetted restaurant. It's decorated in fine style with period furniture and original artwork adorning the walls and there's a private walled garden to the rear. The dining room with its oak tables and restored boards serves a Modern British menu with a European twist featuring dishes such as Wild mushroom risotto with ricotta, white truffle and a puree of cepes. The 100-bin wine list offers plenty of choice for all tastes and budgets. Healds Hall was built in 1764 and is closely associated with Charlotte Bronte, who based a character in her novel 'Shirley' on former resident Rev. Hammond Robertson. The current owners took over in 1979 and have developed the property into an award-winning family-run hotel and restaurant. It's set in peaceful grounds and has 24 ensuite rooms, all furnished to a high standard and some dating back to the 18th century. Nine miles north of York, this 200-year-old pub has built up a fantastic reputation for its food and boasts an AA rosette, a Michelin bib gourmand and an entry in the Good Food Guide. The bistro-style menu is built upon fresh, local produce with seafood a speciality. There's also a marked Med influence here with the risotto a popular choice. Husband-and-wife team Simon and Rena Gueller have made quite an impact at the Box Tree. This Ilkley restaurant has for some 40 years enjoyed a reputation as one of the north's best restaurants -- but within just four months of the Guellers taking over the reins in autumn 2004, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star. Simon (ex-Rascasse, Guellers) is one of Yorkshire's most accomplished chefs and at the Box Tree he has put together a modern take on classical French cooking with an emphasis on locally sourced produce, complemented by an extensive wine list. Maverick Chef Patron Scott Hessel took over the former Cunning Corner Inn and after an extensive refurbishment created the comfortable, congenially quirky bar and restaurant now known as the Old Bore at Rishworth. Scott is a former winner of the Roux Brothers scholarship and has a culinary pedigree that takes in notable Michelin establishments Europe-wide. Such training forms the bedrock of his seasonal, inventive and regularly changing menus. Regular events such as Fish Fridays -- where during summer there is an extended menu of seafood from our shores -- showcases what the Old Bore does so well. There is an extensive wine list running to over 150 bins which provides a classy counterpoint to the food, complemented by their own Old Bore Bitter, credited by Olive magazine. Although The Wensleydale Heifer has been around for hundreds of years, it’s the current management that have really put this north Yorkshire hotel and restaurant on the map.
