Set in 20 private acres of country garden, moor and woodland, Gilpin Lodge sits high above Bowness on the road to Crook, almost opposite Windermere Golf Club. The Cunliffe family first arrived at this Lakeland country house in 1917 and in 1987 turned it into a hotel, now run by two generations of the family. The three-AA-rosetted restaurant is run by Head Chef Russell Plowman and emphasises fresh seasonal produce sourced from within the National Park where possible. Lunch and dinner are served in four dining rooms, each with its own character and style; guests are invited to browse the walk-in wine cellars, and tables are reserved for the entire meal time - there is no rush. Hipping Hall near Kirkby Lonsdale is one of the northwest's select group of fine dining 'restaurants with rooms' . The building has been sensitively restored, matching contemporary style with classic features, and while most of the structure dates back to the 17th century, the restaurant itself, which has a wonderful walk-in fireplace, is Tudor. The food is classic British with a French twist brought to you by new chef Michael Wilson. Choose from the a la carte or a tasting menu. Just off the main street in Windermere, Jerichos is a multi-award-winning British restaurant run by chef-patron Chris Blaydes and wife Jo. Chris's two-AA-rosette cooking uses the freshest seasonal produce to deliver a small but perfectly formed menu. The restaurant seats just 36 with a choice of four starters and five mains, complemented by a 60-bin wine list. This idyllic Ullswater retreat for many sets the standard in luxurious Lakeland living. It was here, in this remote northeast corner of the Lakes, that Francis Coulson and Brian Sack together invented the concept of the English Country House hotel more than fifty years ago. And really not a great deal has changed in the intervening years. Sharrow Bay, with its 12 acres of private grounds, sublime views, sumptuous furnishings and impeccable service, remains an isolated haven, far from the madding crowds of the South Lakes. This foodie-driven country house hotel is beautifully situated at the foot of Cat Bells and close to Derwent Water. It has just eight bedrooms and serves only 18 covers in the two-AA-rosetted restaurant. Guests meet in the lounge at 7pm for canapés and aperitifs with dinner served at one sitting at 7.30pm.Everything here is home-made and sourced wherever possible from local Newlands Valley farmers. Cream teas are served in the daytime and Swinside Lodge puts great importance on providing a top-quality breakfast experience to start the day properly. Special dietary requirements can be catered for too. Swinside Lodge also features in the Good Food Guide and Michelin guide and recently won the Lakeland small hotel of the year award for 2007. As the name suggests The Hideaway is located off the beaten track in Windermere. A true hidden gem, this restaurant with rooms is in fact a recently refurbished, elegant Victorian detached house. All the original features have been reclaimed and restored to their former glory from the ornate, stone window frames and a geometric tiled hallway. The house successfully marries the old and the new with a contemporary finish throughout. The 11 en-suite rooms run from comfy, super comfy to ultimate comfy. Run by Richard and Lisa Gornall the atmosphere sets a romantic feel and its a retreat for those who love good food and wine with the beauty of the lakes around them. Richard is an accomplished chef and the food here has been recognised with an AA Rosette, expect fine tableware in the two dining rooms with the best table affording views of the well kept garden. The menu features beautifully presented dishes that make the best use of the wealth of local produce available. With as much as possible being home made, simple modern British dishes offer a sense of place here. Welsh/Lancashire Rarebit with home made chutney, Fell-bred Cumbrian beef fillet and fun desserts like Chocolate Brownie Sundae. Here whether staying or dining you are made to feel special and the top level of service offers a real treat without breaking the bank. The Pheasant is a wonderfully atmospheric old coaching inn, hidden away off the northwest edge of Bassenthwaite Lake.
