This place is all shinny and new. Had a lovely makeover. Very trendy yet old school, with its fine traditional china and high teas. It's now attached to a cool giftshop We had a couple of awesome cakes and proper loose tea with a strainer. In the heart of Grasmere so you can fuel up pre or post walk! give it a go for sure..

Overpriced even for the lake district. The coffee cup was a tiny teacup & only half full(£1.75! that's £3.50 for a full cup), the guy serving expecting you to fill up the other half with milk. Also the toasted teacake i was given (£1.95) was no bigger than a rich tea biscuit. Should have known when we entered, only one couple were in there & a man sitting down, He was the guy serving. When we left approx 7 mins later the place was deserted. We were both completely underwhelmed & still in need of sustenance & a caffeine kick. Not two minutes later we were outside a place called Greens which was almost full. We got the last table & had a proper teacake & the coffee was in a cafetiere with almost 3 cups in. There's too much competition in that area to think you can get away with taking advantage of people... We will never set foot in The Cumbria Cafe again.. Well done Greens for saving the day, What a fab place.

we ate at the Dove and Olive Bistro, which is part of the Wordsworth hotel and is primarily for non residents. It has its own bar area to which you are taken for pre-dinner drinks before your meal. The hostess and waiter were very professional and looked after us from the moment we arrived. The menu was not very complicated, but catered for everyone. Our meal was delicious and the homemade soup was to die for!.Everything was made from fresh with local produce. I would recommend the Bistro highly for anyone staying in Grasmere, and the prices were very reasonable for such a tourist area. We will definitely be going again when we go back in October. Please try it,you will not be disappointed!.

This is a great find. Maybe we were not so clever at finding the decent eateries in the Lakes, but this is one amazing little place. Really enjoyed the meal. We love food and does this place do good food!!! My duck was so tasty. As for the seafood terrine...WOW. We were only up for 3 days and we only found this on day 3. We were gutted. Would have eaten there 3 nights on the trot. Staff were great too. Yeah, been to all the posh restaurants in London. Gordon does good food, but these guys do it for a lot cheaper in a lot less pretentious environment!!

during the past 5yrs we visited baldreys many times with both family and friends whilst on holiday in the area. Previously the premises seemed to be consistently above average in both food served always adding a little twist in the taste the chefs effort very apparent and waiting staff always polite and interested overall well worth a visit and confident to be recommended. Sadly on our last visit on Monday 9th march we ordered a humble jacket potato with a topping, unfortunately the potato was raw in places. However we persevered to complete our lunch. Regretfully when one of the waiting staff ( a woman with brown curly hair) came to clear the table we politely mentioned the poor quality of our meal. Quite frankly her attitude resembled "i couldn't give a toss" I doubt this is the response i trust that baldreys management expects judging from the facade. We were certainly shocked. Surely this is the quickest way to lose custom. I hope baldreys isn't in decline, as basic training is needed here. Not one person acknowledged our complaint but were very efficient in taking our money never the less

Had an excellent lunch here last week. The jacket potato with a trio of salads was absolutely delicious. It was beautifully presented and the service was fast. Good value for money. Will definitely go back again.

All nine of us enjoyed a very good meal here. A good menu for both adults and children. Excellent service and good all round value. (Aug 2008)

Please do not book with this restaurant, please read about the way in which they treat the foreign staff and treat them on "Gumtree" it's like reverting back to the 1800's low paid, very very long working hours, and most of all the abuse these employers dish out to the foreign staff is well outdated. Thanks for reading

Probably the best bistro in Grasmere. No silly prices, excellent choice and a good, friendly host.

Quite simply, the Wordsworth Hotel was the most disappointing hotel experience ever. We’ve stayed in Grasmere lots of times, at various different hotels, B&Bs or rental cottages but we’d always fancied trying the Wordsworth. The occasion was my Dad’s 80th birthday. The worst thing was the service, but the rooms weren’t much better. At dinner, it took hours to get everyone served - it was like something from Gordon’s Kitchen Nightmares. The food wasn’t that great - over-fancy and way overpriced. We’d expected good, wholesome Cumbrian fare. My mother ordered steak and her face was something to behold when three tiny pieces of meat in a fancy sauce arrived. It would have been funny if it hadn’t been a very special family event getting ruined. And if the whole thing hadn’t been costing an arm and a leg. They couldn’t even manage to serve breakfast promptly and efficiently. We had to ask for everything at least 3 times: tea, toast and so on. The rooms were really dingy and in need of a good lick of paint. We had blood-stained wallpaper in ours. My sister and her boyfriend had a shower that didn’t work and - worse still - a toilet that didn’t flush. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. The pool was grubby too. It had that uncared for feel about it. There were two unwanted, shabby old sofas in one corner. The Jacuzzi was stone cold despite us and other guests complaining to the management. In the gym, the rowing machine didn’t work either. We did complain several times whilst there - as did other guests. In fact, I sat in reception for ten minutes and witnessed three different sets of guests complaining about various things. My mother wrote to the hotel in September, immediately after our stay. My mother has phoned the Wordsworth several times to ask why they have not had the courtesy to reply. It’s now over two months later and we haven’t heard a word. I really wouldn’t recommend this hotel. There are some lovely hotels in Grasmere, many cheaper than this one but with a much higher standard of accommodation, food and service.

Nice cafe offering excellent cakes and a range of snacks. So good we called twice ~ once at the beginning of our wander and once at the end. There were eight of us in total and we were all served quickly by the polite staff. Problem with one chilly coffee was sorted straight away. Sticky toffee pudding with cream recommended. Cheers

On a crisp cold winters day (I have only been in winter), you could do no better than to stop at the Jumble Room for a bowl of warming soup or delicious risotto; the puddings are good too! The atmosphere is quirky, relaxed and friendly, and you will even find a few annuals from your youth to keep you entertained. I found it by accident three years ago, and returned by design for the first time a few weeks ago. It has only got better, and is now a must visit whenever I am back in the lakes.

This little tea room is quaint, old, and very welcoming. The food is home made, the service is relaxed, the furniture old and the atmosphere warm, especially after a wet rainy day in the lakes. There's a big collection of teas, the rarebit is delicious as are the cakes and it's been there for years!

The ambiance at the Cumbria Cafe is unequalled in Grasmere. On any given summer evening, one can feast on traditional and moderately priced English dishes while gazing at a wishing well on a village lane and listen to the gentle bleating of the sheep nearby. The service is excellent, the dinners delicious, and views of the fells breathtaking.
