We travel From Welwyn to eat here often with friends -as always food /cocktails /wine /excellent service .

We’ve been coming here for awhile now. The food and service is always consistent in fact, I cannot fault anything. Definitely a hidden gem in suburbia.

Wow. Where do I start. My wife and I had a spectacular meal here. I had a fish taco to start and she had the oysters, both went down a treat. For main we shared the MK Platter for two: lobster, smoky chargrilled prawns, scallops, and mussels in a lovely tomato sauce. Every element was spot on. I finished with the homemade tiramisu (my favourite dessert) and it was easily one of the best I’ve had - perfect texture and sweet, heavenly flavours. It brought back memories of my Italian childminder’s version. I literally savoured every spoon. The team handled my wife’s dairy allergy very well, offering clear options and making sure everything was safe for her. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with beautifully designed interiors that felt both classy and homey. The soft Latin music—think Pablo Milanés— was a nice touch and completed the relaxed vibe. Service was outstanding: friendly, attentive, and genuinely respectful without being overbearing. It’s rare to find such a balance of great food, ambiance, and hospitality. This is not our first time here and will definitely not be our last. And I think it has just taken the top spot for "Our favourite restaurant to go to on special occasions".

Delicious from start to finish! Angela gave us such a warm welcome, we were optimistic about everything from the "get go". Our starters : fried fish taco - there are not enough superlatives to describe these delights, Roasted Scallops in their shells - soft, juicy and a joy to behold. Our mains; mixed fish grill and octopus with potatoes continued the theme of deliciousness. We were able to experience deserts. The tiramisu was essentially the only dish that did not overwhelm, however all was okay as we sampled the freshly cooked pear tarte tatin - Oh my days, gorgeousness on a plate.

The place is really, really good. Superb food and super friendly service.

The Dover sole is always delicious at a much lower price than central London - top quality seafood is always expensive, but this is the least expensive place I know to eat it, with the bonus of friendly service, a good atmosphere of locals enjoying themselves, and a likeable slightly quirky interior.

Absolutely excellent food. Restaurant immaculate and welcoming. Food was freshly cooked and portions were excellent. Would go more if we lived closer.

Been going to Matthews for years. Beautifully decorated family run restaurant. Always a comfortable and pleasing atmosphere, it’s a haven in North London. Food is always exceptional and staff is very friendly and attentive . We’ve never had a bad experience or a bad meal and it’s a great go to, especially as I am a pescatarian and we’re so lucky to have such a great fish restaurant so close to home. There’s always a good selection of seafood variety . Please don’t ever leave !

We had dinner here on Tuesday with 2 friends. The food and the service were excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. I had fish soup followed by smoked haddock with colcannon. Delicious both. My husband had ceviche and fish mixed grill and these were also delicious (we always swap). The food was tremendous: marvellous to eat so well so close to home. Better fish than in Cornwall where we holidayed last and as good as central London.

Superb dinner here. Lovely, cosy ambience and the food was delicious - so fresh and amazing flavours. Our waitress was excellent also. My friend has numerous food intolerances but the waitress had taken the trouble to remember each one and was very knowledgeable on what choices my friend could have, and even able to adapt some options. (Helpful that the food is freshly prepared. And you could taste it). Thank you, look forward to returning!

This is honestly the best fish and seafood restaurant we have eaten in for a very long time. The service and atmosphere creates a great dining experience. The flavours of every dish are incredible.

5 stars I visited Matthews Kitchen last night and had a fantastic experience. The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. What really stood out was the stunning seafood display—it shows just how fresh and high-quality their ingredients are. Even though I don’t live in the area, I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I’m in London. I’m looking forward to visiting again with my relatives who live in Whetstone. Thank you to the entire team for a wonderful evening!

We’ve been here a few times over the years now and on every visit, they do not disappoint. Food has always been excellent, but in fact, it seems their service is improving all the time. Our most recent visit was a birthday occasion, but the very friendly and attentive staff went out of their way to make the event all the more special. Highly recommended!
