Lunched there today. My generous portion of lime and chilli quid served with a salad and fantastic salsa - simply delicious!! It wasn? busy and the smiling waitress was attentive but not overly so (which was great!). My partner had warm duck salad as starters, minute steak with béarnaise sauce and the fussy eater enjoyed it all! We were so full but were tempted with the vanilla creme brulle which we shared. It wasn? too sweet and the texture was just right. Will definitely be back.

The Souk

Visited this on a Friday night (be sure to book ahead). The souk tries to evoke the atmosphere of the Moroccan souks. Dimmed light, tables and chairs close together, baskets with fruit and veg, waiter wearing a fez. The food was astonishingly good: do try the mezze. The service was friendly and warm. As a desert you can have a sheesha, which alone is reason enough to pay a visit to this restaurant. Only one minor issue: its in a new bland building, which does not look very inviting.

We had 8 mezes between 4 of us plus the 'local' beer. The food was very tasty, fresh and varied. It is wonderful to have something like this in Plymouth. Our only criticism is that the portions were a little small. 8 dishes between four with pitta bread should have been enough but we were still hungry. Some of the dishes, e.g. Felafel or baby spinach have three pieces on them when four would have been better (and easier to share). The orange cake dessert is a must; this was a very generous portion and so filled the gap. The cost of £7 per head for 2 mezes and a drink is good but upping the portions (even at a slight increase in cost) would be better.

A table in this little bistro is often hard to get but our luck was in when we dined in May. We decided to have the Bistro Meze between us (with a lovely bottle of Sauvignon Blanc) then we followed with Red Mullet and Gurnard respectively. We shared a gluten-free Polenta cake to finish and some excellently sourced coffee. Our evening just flew by as we enjoyed every morsel. Bravo for simplicity and cool jazz to boot. Do what we did and book for a lovely supper.

This restaurant had a brilliant, lively atmosphere-great for a work night out, the tequila bar upstairs is excellent too, a little expensive though. But really good fun.

Waterbiscuit

I visited here the other night with a girlfriend for the first time - the service was excellent, and waitress sat down with and an explained all the dishes and made recommendations. The garlic spicy potatoes are fantastic, as is the lamb tagine. Very atmospheric with some beautiful lamps and decoration. Definitely planning on going again, a new favourite!

Waterbiscuit

Classic greasy spoon, open all night, would recommend the breakfast brunch. Have been here many times, always keen to go again, and covet most of the street signs!

Have been here twice for lunch and cannot recommend it enough. We all had the three course lunchtime special for 12.99 (i think) and the standard of food and service compared with places I've visited in Plymouth that we've paid 100 for two of us. Portions might be a little small if you were ravenous but perfect for lunch. Staff were fantastic - never had to ask who had ordered what and we never felt rushed. I ate here about three years ago before the refurb - you wouldn't believe it was the same building.

It's all relative and although this place is pricier than some other restaurants you really do get what you pay for. I can't recommend it highly enough everything about this place was fabulous - if you want somewhere truly wonderful for that special occasion visit this place!

this is the tanner brothers new place; the food was really good, and we had high expectations. The service was annoying - not bad, just a bit too chatty and over-attentive for so-called informal dining... I like to pour my own wine. Worst of all: BLACK NYLON NAPKINS - WHY? We'd go back though, there's nowhere else like this in Plymouth.

Barbican Kitchen – Plymouth
