Haven? been in a while but returned there after 6 years to find nothing much had changed. Same décor (nice enough, just a bit more worn), same photographs of the famous people who have visited the restaurant in the past (from Tony Blair to Vanessa Mae - strangely did spot any recent famous faces so maybe they have stopped coming). Same menu (covers all the favourites like duck with pancakes and a few specialities like half lobster). Same toilets (clean but with broken wash basin and cracked tiles) - it? a pity that a restaurant capable of seating 100-200 guests only seems to have 2 single toilets, watch out on busy nights. On this night I was part of a group of 21 from work, so apologies to those other guests who thought they could have a quiet romantic meal out. On another day this may have been possible but not on this night. From previous visits back in 2000 I can remember being on both sides of the romantic night out in which other workgroups attended on mass, while I was with partner, and on another night I was one of the mass, so watch out if you expect a quiet night. Tonight we had the banquet for 8 (multiple times over), The selection and quality of the food was very good. The starters tasty and fresh (vegetable spring rolls, meaty spare ribs, crispy seaweed and prawn toast), duck pancakes plentiful and tasty, the prawns large and succulent and the remaining dishes covering a good selection vegetable, beef and chicken dishes. I wasn? drinking, but others reported some of the cheaper bottles of red being good and the white wine undrinkable (and being returned). Desert was a joke, 5 segments of a sour orange arranged in a star with a single grape in the centre does not make a dessert in my mind - why do they bother serving it?. Service good and prompt, although they where a little keen on us going at the end of the night (but perhaps that was due to a few of the dinner party getting a little louder as the evening went on.). Price wise I still think it was on the expensive side, but then banquets for 8 are aimed at the corporate client with expense accounts. Normal price £8-10 for a main, £3 for boiled rice are more reasonable. Because of the quality of the food I would be prepared to go back however I have a concern about the hygiene. The lazy Suzy on the table was sticky before we even started the meal, suggesting that after previous meals it wasn? washed down (i.e. food dropped on the top and wipe away between courses but never washed properly). More of a concern was the chopsticks (plastic) which felt a little funny, not sticky but not fresh and clean either, the ones used by my companions also felt the same. Knives and Forks are available on request.

It is perfect for a romantic meal or to celebrate a family occasion. If you want to have a meal before the theatre or after the service and food is wonderful.
