'Big brother' to the award-winning Chung Ying Garden on Thorp Street, this was the first Chinese restaurant in Birmingham to cater to both Western and Chinese tastes. Situated in the heart of Chinatown, it opened in 1981 and the menu here adds up to more than 300 dishes. The restaurant caters for up to 350 people on two floors with the focus firmly on the food.

Ethnic restaurants often get overlooked when it comes to handing out awards but this Cantonese restaurant now well into its third decade has boasted an AA rosette and listings in both the Good Food Guide and Hardens. Established in 1987, Chung Ying Garden offers a vast selection of dishes (including supposedly the most comprehensive Chinese menu in Britain) and seats 350 people over two floors in what was formerly the Thorp Street army barracks. Chung Ying Cantonese on Wrottesley Street is a sister restaurant.

Kinnaree Thai Restaurant enjoys a great location not far from the Mailbox and Broad Street overlooking the Birmingham & Worcester canal. The English House is a new addition to the Lichfield dining scene and as the name might suggest specializes in modern British cooking. The weekly-changing menu is based on local, seasonal produce -- starters might include their Steak Teaser (thin slices of premium beef -- sirloin, fillet, rib-eye and rump – quickly pan-fired) or Poached duck egg with rocket, cured ham, butter sauce and homemade bread. Mains are served with vegetables and new season potatoes and range from Faggots with apple mash and onion gravy to Red snapper fillet with a parsley and lemon crust and thyme-roasted new potatoes. Steaks also feature prominently and are sourced from within a 50-mile radius. A set lunch is available Wednesday to Saturday and Wednesday also showcases the ‘Best of British’ taster menu where you can enjoy and share a range of small plates.
