Enjoying a stunning position overlooking Windermere and the Langdale Fells, Holbeck Ghyll was the former hunting lodge of Lord Lonsdale, 'The Yellow Earl' and first president of the AA. The arts and crafts interior features stained glass, carved wooden panelling and inglenook fireplaces and there are 23 bedrooms and suites spread over the main house and lodges. The rooms give a choice of traditional luxury with modern facilities or contemporary style with traditional touches. The hotel has received many awards and accolades over the years not least having retained a Michelin Star for the food for the last ten years. Head chef David McLaughlin and team have been a driving force behind the restaurant and are creating traditional and modern British dishes with French influence, each presented with contemporary style and flair. Dining is spread over two rooms; the Oak Panelled and The Terrace rooms both afford views of the lake and beyond. Lunch can be a leisurely affair offering three courses for £30pp or if tight for time, being only five minutes drive from Windermere village, you can enjoy an express two courses turned around in less than an hour for just £24pp. In the evening you can choose from the daily changing, seasonal, three course menus for £60pp or the Gourmet tasting menu for £78 or £118 with wine flight. Expect starters such as boudin blanc with sauteed langoustines and chorizo foam or salt cod panna cotta with pickled vegetables and salmon beignets. Mains offer roast Loin of Venison with pumpkin puree, braised red cabbage and herb gnocchi and poulet de Bresse with truffle risotto and cep puree. Desserts are complex with mille feuille of rhubarb, oat and vanilla and nougat glace with passion fruit sorbet and mango parcels. The wine list has been singled out in the past being awarded The Good Food Guide Wine List of the Year 2009 and offers around 280 bins.
