Northcote, Langho

Now entering its third decade under the impeccable stewardship of Nigel Haworth and Craig Bancroft, Northcote at Langho, near Blackburn, is the quintessential 'restaurant with rooms'. Nigel oversees the Michelin-starred kitchen and this former winner of the Egon Ronay Chef Of The Year award has built himself the reputation as a champion of Lancashire food and producers. Local produce is much in evidence with beef and lamb sourced from Bowland, grouse from Abbeystead, sea bass from Lytham, potted shrimps from Southport and cheeses from Beacon Fell. An aga has even been installed in the kitchens so that Nigel's signature Lancashire Hot Pot can be slow-cooked to perfection (you need to order 6 hours in advance). General Manager Craig Bancroft is equally passionate about a wine cellar that stretches to 400-plus bins. The extensive selection of half bottles makes experimentation and food matching affordable and encouraged.

The best way to experience the Northcote team in action is with the £58 five-course Gourmet Menu. Or if you're feeling especially adventurous, trade up to the eight- or ten-course Lancashire Tasting menu. (Excellent value is the Gourmet Break which includes champagne and canapes on arrival, the gourmet dinner, overnight accommodation, breakfast and newspaper from £142.50 per person.) Northcote won Independent Hotel Of The Year in 1999 and has 14 individually designed ensuite bedrooms. Nigel and Craig have also recently moved into the gastropub market with their Ribble Valley Inns brand which now comprises four venues - The Three Fishes at Mitton, near Whalley, The Highwayman at Burrow, near Kirkby Lonsdale, The Clog & Billycock at Pleasington, near Blackburn and The Bull at Broughton, near Skipton.
