Food was outstanding, staff were very friendly, a proper family run Independant restaurant. The only slight down side was the decor but that wouldn’t stop me going back.

Even though it was over 60 years since I last dined with my parents at the Magpie, the quality is undiminished. The service is as good as ever and it will not be another 60 years before my wife and I return!

This was our first visit to The Magpie on the recommendation of friends and seeing the queues outside we thought it must be good. I had already booked a table for a special occasion and informed them beforehand. I thought that it might have been noted but we were shown to our table and alas, it wasn’t but never mind. We ordered our food which was very nice but I felt that the chips were on the pale side to be honest. We thought we couldn’t go wrong with traditional fish, chips and mushy peas with a cup of tea or two. The food was sufficient for us and when our waitress asked if we wanted any desserts which we declined. She went away and returned less than a minute later with the bill and asked how we were going to pay ! Although the food was very nice, plentiful and hot, I felt as though we were being rushed to leave as soon as we’d finished our food. I found that a little disappointing and unnecessary as we had not finished our drinks. It didn’t spoil our visit but it didn’t sit well with me. If we were to visit Whitby in the future, we probably will eat there again but I would also consider other places in the area so we have some comparisons.

My wife and I went to The Aegean across lunch for a child free Wedding Anniversary meal. The food was excellent and the wine and cocktails were amazing too. The service we received was first class from the moment we arrived. I would highly recommend a visit to this restaurant.

Great crab salad, great calamari, great fish and chips. The Magpie is basically a great place to eat. Staff very friendly. Would recommend booking. A must if visiting Whitby

Mum and I booked the Magpie restaurant, and had Plaice and Chips (and mushy peas) the food was wonderful and the service was excellent, friendly and helpful. Definitely going again.

Wish I’d never booked this restaurant. If I could give a zero rating I would. Booked a table for our Silver Wedding Anniversary months in advance. Turned up on the day to find the restaurant was closed due to electrical problems. We had received a booking confirmation the day before but no notification of the closure, even though I had supplied my mobile number and email when booking. I had to actively chase up the manager to complain (even though I had sent two emails and left a verbal message message). Eventually was told we could have a free meal. Had already explained that we live several hundred miles away and this visit to York was a one off. My only regret is that I booked this restaurant in the first place when there are so many other great alternatives in York.
