We called in for Sunday Lunch on our way back from Darlington to Leeds and were delighted to discover a prober traditional pub serving good ale and home cooked food The roasts were of good quality and generous portions My wife raved about the bread and butter pudding whilst I had a well prepared Irish coffee Ambience was good, service attentive and reasonably priced We will return and would have no hesitation in recommending this as a great place to eat

We take my dad to the Empress when in Harrogate for the Sunday carvery, we were there on Sunday and as ever the food was great always a massive choice of meats, lovley large homemade yorkshire puds, plenty of roast potatoes and a massive selection of different veg to help your self to, hot tasty food and gravy, as much or as little as you want, great value for money we always leave happy and full, put this together with the service and great staff, can't recommend highly enough.

The service was excellent, but unfortunately, the food was diabolical ! There were 8 of us having a family get together and in the newly refurbished premises, we were expecting great things. How wrong we were. The refurbished Empress is dark and dingy and not at all what we were expecting. Such a shame, as the it is a beautiful building in a lovely situation overlooking the Stray. The fish and chips were soggy and tasteless and the gammon and steak were like leather. Poor quality produce , cooked by somebody who hadn’t a clue what they were doing. The only saving grace was the service, which was excellent. I didn’t make a formal complaint, as It would have spoilt our evening out together. However, we will certainly not be returning or recommending this venue to anybody. Definitely a place to avoid!

Came here on the Friday and the food was so lovely we cancelled our booking for our Sat night restaurant and booked to come back here again. We saw lots of food come out, all looked great. My hubby decided on steak pie and I had the salmon for mains- calamari and black pudding tart for starters. It was really tasty, this is definitely a place we will travel to to eat. Great beers (Black sheep) very reasonably priced lovely wine. Great service. Come here if you are nearby

We arrived to be told that they had tried to call us to say that we couldn’t have our table as they were having a cheese and wine evening. We had to find somewhere else to eat.

Food very good quality too much though. No need for two Yorkshire puddings! Young waitress very polite and efficient but the older lady had left her charm at home not rude just not pleasant.

Two of us visited for afternoon tea at a reserved table. It was very quiet and the surroundings comfortable and pleasant. The waiter was extremely friendly and obliging. The food was plentiful and the sandwiches and cakes very good, but unfortunately the scones weren't the best I've tasted and were a little dry. As much tea and coffee as we wished.

My daughter and I had a very warm welcome from the gentleman who greeted us. Great start to our afternoon tea for two and it only got better. We had a table reserved for us that was unexpected. We was served with tea and coffee straight away and had very little wait time for our sandwiches and cakes, all served on a lovely cake stand and all was well presented. We managed to eat all put in front of us as it was all so delicious, Our friendly gentleman brought us a free glass of prosecco, another lovely surprise. our compliments to the chef and the friendly gentleman. We had a lovely relaxing afternoon and will definitely be returning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea. The service, atmosphere was excellent. The food was lovely with one exception - the scones were overdone.

Stayed in Staveley for a short break and booked to have an evening meal at the Royal Oak. We had garlic mushrooms and ham terrine for starters with fish and chips and shepherd pie for mains. Lovely food, very generous portions. Thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you
