Had a few days in Whitby 12 to 15 October and couldn't leave without visiting the Magpie. Had fantastic meal the fish was superb as was the scampi, excellent homemade tartare sauce Our waitress was lovely and gave us lots of information about Whitby as well as our choices of food and drink, and we were made to feel special, Place is spotlessly clean so felt in a safe environment. Cannot fault it at all

We were in Whitby for just a couple of days and had to find a fish and chip shop, of course and after reading the reviews settled on the Magpie. In the main we were highly delighted with two small exceptions. Firstly after we were seated we waited a long time before anybody seemed to recognise we were actually there and secondly on quality we felt our chips were underdone, barely coloured and anaemic looking. Maybe due to the throughput they were pulled out of the fryer a little early?

The food was lovely, we went on the early bird on a Sunday, good value. The staff were nice and our particular waitress was so lovely, she was friendly and jokey. We were sat upstairs as there was a large party of 17 of us. We all said the food was great, some said it was the nicest/ best they had tasted. We will definatly go again

Coming to North Yorkshire for a few years , following a review by A.A. Gill we make a round trip of 120 miles from where we usually stay to eat at The Magpie . This time we were local and as usual looked forward to our visit. We ate there twice the quality of the food was up to its usual high standard, fresh and cooked to perfection and well presented. Unfortunately the service was not up to their usual standard especially on the second visit. We ordered tea, first the cups arrived , then the tea and hot water but no milk. As there wasn’t any staff in sight I went to ask for it. No apology and somewhat indifferent attitude. When the food arrived we had to ask for ketchup which usually arrives in a timely manner. The service was perfunctory and the first time that we haven’t left a tip. We go for the whole experience maybe the next time it will be better.

We recently visited the Duke for Sunday lunch, 10 adults and 3 children (all under 2). The staff were so accommodating with the children and the food was delicious. The whole party had a great time and we will definitely be going back. I’d recommend it to anyone!

I enjoyed my first visit. The food was good and reasonably priced. The side dishes I chose were amazing. I was left a little disappointed with my main course, the spicy chicken men which I didn’t enjoy at all. I would definitely like to go back and try some more of the menu. Overall good experience and good value food.
