Food and service excellent

Enjoyed 3 fantastic dinners at the Magpie. A really impressive range of delicious dishes at very reasonable prices. Service was efficient and friendly, booking system works well. On one occasion we were seated near a very noisy group and couldn't hear ourselves speak but staff helpfully moved us to a quiter spot. Great restaurant

Visited for a birthday on a Monday evening. We had pre-booked - which was essential otherwise there was a 90minute wait for a table ! As expected, service was good (although they did almost forget to deliver a second drink). Food was lovely. Fresh, tasty and the batter on the fish was really light. Chips were light and not at all greasy. For where and what it was it was a very good overall experience. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We visited The Crown with our little boy and the atmosphere was lovely and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Service was a little slow as it took over an hour to get our starters and my little boys main, however, the staff noticed we had been waiting and apologised profusely and brought our starters followed quickly by our mains. Mistakes happen and it is how they are addressed that matters the most and The Crown dealt with the situation brilliantly by also removing the cost of our starters from our bill. We would definitely come back as the food, atmosphere and staff are lovely!

Very friendly staff and did not have to wait long. Food was delicious and good value for money. Will visit again next time we are in York.

Great meal- best fish and chips ever, brilliant range of food on the menu outside standard f and c, super desserts, drinks and service. Can't fault it.

Our first time and we chose the Meze as recommended on the menu for those who can't decide or have little knowledge of Greek food. We were surprised at the portion sizes, we were expecting 'tasters' of several dishes but the portions were big. 9 starters, 3 fish, 4 meats plus bread, rice, salad, chips etc. All in all way too much, needless to say 'doggy bag', but great value for money. There was no draught beer but the bottled Greek beer was OK. Scored 4/5 for the atmosphere as it was a Monday evening and not a lot going on. All the meals seemed reasonably priced and the Calypso coffee to round off the evening was one of the best.

I was very disappointed with my latest visit to the Magpie Restaurant. As a family we have visited the Magpie on a number of occasions over the last 30 years and on my latest visit there was no atmosphere and I felt very cold throughout my meal. I will not be visiting the Magpie again as there are now more choices and better value Restaurants in the area.

4 of us had different types of fish, chips n mushy peas with bread n butter - fab! Great service n quick too.

On a visit to Whitby this week, I booked a meal at the Magpie, having enjoyed it last year. No disappointments! The staff were clearly very busy but attentive; the food was delicious as always, and we managed to share one pudding between two. I will come again!

The food was absolutely incredible and beautifully presented all at a very reasonable price for the amount of sushi we ate!! Recommended to everyone in the area!

Yet again the Magpie Cafe has produced the most wonderful meal for my wife and I !! We are here last night and it was a no brainer to come back again tonight It is the core of our holidays to Whitby - amazing food off a fantastic menu and just the most engaging staff !! Simply the best ! xx
