Lovely food. Staff very helpful. Thoroughly enjoyable evening
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordDisappointing meal yesterday. My sea bass was a tiny fillet and the veg consisted of 3 overcooked roast potatoes, very greasy mixture of parsnip and carrots and a little broccoli. Have had the catch of the day before which was much nicer and served with more appropriate fresh vegetables. Very noisy too as a couple of ladies groups were there too and enjoyed themselves at the top of their voices which meant my brother in law could not hear our own conversation. We really like this pub and would like to think that it will return to better food standards in future.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe both had cashew nut curry but were disappointed as it arrived only reasonably warm so sent the food back to be reheated. We had Jude’s salted caramel ice cream in pots which had very little flavour and not a patch on the ice cream you used to serve in scoops. Think it’s time to have new menus as these dishes seem to have been offered for more than a year.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordI wish I’d read some of the reviews before booking our lunch yesterday. The welcome was lukewarm warm as was the food. I really feel that you could with a little effort make a big difference. Please try.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe stumbled across The Abingdon Arms by accident as somewhere to stop for lunch on a long journey home and we are so pleased we did! We lived the local feel to the pub and enjoyed sitting out in the garden! The menu was well priced and included some classic and more unusual options! We enjoyed the food and atmosphere and if passing again, we would visit again!
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe 4 older ladies booked for lunch yesterday (Monday) the pub was very quiet but within 30 mins was really busy! We thought that amazing on a Monday! 2 of us were disappointed the fish pie was sold out but when we asked -the waitress said they had salmon and roast potatoes with spring veg! We loved it! One had the vegetarian cottage pie and the other had the Pate as a main course! They were both thrilled! We wanted the Apple& Pear crumble and Custard but that was sold out as well! But we had the warm brownie with ice cream! It was delicious! We had a lovely leisurely 3 hour lunch we thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you .
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe had Sunday lunch with 2 friends. Our food did not arrive for over an hour and was not hot. The food itself was not bad but crammed onto a too small plate. It was obvious that the place was understaffed in the kitchen and serving. This seems odd because they must know how many lunches they will have to serve and should be better prepared. With pubs closing at an alarming rate it is vital that to survive they must offer an experience which exceeds expectations or people will simply not go. It would be a shame to see a beautiful pub like the Abingdon Arms under pressure when they could address these issues with better management and preparation.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordHad Sunday lunch which we all thought as “just about ok” . Nice pub, service a bit slow , but we all thought the manager was abrupt and v customer unfriendly.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe had a very nice lunch on Monday 4 May. The food was excellent as always and the atmosphere as we expected, being regular visitors. However, we were not pleased with the attitude of one of our servers who was rather brusque, bordering on rude at times. In her defence we believe that understaffing was the main cause as there were only two members of staff serving a pretty full house. As going out to lunch is now seen as a bit of a luxury to many people the overall experience should be beyond expectations and not fall short as this did.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordGood food, good beer, good service, good setting. Possibly could be a little better value but this is Oxford and general life now.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordBeautiful setting. Very basic and not that nice pub grub. Just OK. Service ok - had to ask where are mains were, as took a long time to come. Staff not very warm or welcoming.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe fully echo Mr Britton's comments below - great beer, very pleasant surroundings but longer wait for food than expected (pub not that busy), food not hot enough when it eventually arrived. Shame because I think it would otherwise have been excellent. We do think the service could be friendlier and a little more involving, including on arrival.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordLove the place but it's always flipping cold (they even provide blankets!) and while the meal was generally good the vegetables had barely seen the pan! The broccoli in particular was so hard it was difficult to even get the fork through the thicker parts. If raw broccoli wasn't edible it would have been inedible! It nearly went back to the kitchen.. Will continue to return but it's disappointing that a pub with such a lovely, and rare, 'vibe' is let down by these easily sorted issues
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe enjoyed a lovely meal at The Abingdon Arms on Sunday. The staff were very attentive and friendly and our food was delicious.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordThis was a slightly mixed experience. Booking a table was easy and I appreciated the reminder the day before. It was good to have a choice of sitting inside or outside. The atmosphere was good with plenty of customers there. The beer was first rate with a good choice. The food came quickly but the roast beef lunches we had could have been hotter. There were an impressive number of vegetables, very well cooked (i.e. not overcooked!). The meat was generous but could have been cooked a little longer as some of it was a little raw for my taste. The service was efficient but could have been a little friendlier.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordThe pub is lovely with an amazing garden but the food was really disappointing especially at those prices. My roast was mostly cold and clearly not fresh, the beef was cold and tough, only some of the vegetables were hot. It was obvious that it had been under a heat lamp as it came out very quickly too.
The Abingdon Arms – OxfordWe've driven past this pub for several years on our way to Ottmoor RSPB Reserve but only just stopped in the other day for the first time for lunch on our wedding anniversary. Excellent service in a very welcoming atmosphere. The food was very good and also very interesting - Goose Pie is not your every day fare. Will be going back and recommending it to our friends
