We had a super meal and excellent service will certainly go back just a shame we don't live closer or we would certainly dine frequently.

Really enjoyed our meal here. I especially enjoyed the seafood pancakes with homemade kimchi. It was nice to try some alcoholic drinks which were new to me. Very friendly service.

The lady looking after us was friendly, interested in what we wanted and were involved with. An excellent hostess.

Food was lovely and very generously portioned. The service however was sadly lacking. We had to ask to place our order and then before we'd even been asked if we wanted to order dessert we were told that our table was needed soon as the staff had taken on an extra booking "you know how it is", we had only been sat at the table an hour and a half and the first 30 minutes of that was waiting for someone to take our order. If the idea of the location move was to gain from passing footfall then the staff are going to need to up their game when dealing with extra customers. As an aside, the ladies toilet area could also do with some further attention as well as the covid safety precautions (QR scanner not working on arrival and staff wearing masks purely to keep their chins warm).

All we were expecting, delicious, plump scampi, light crispy batter on the cod and haddock, gorgeous chips, great prices, and to top it off pleasant friendly staff. Very happy

Staff very kind and helpful they gave lovely service especially as i felt unwell due to my coeliac disease. However before i felt ill i ordered gluten free 9oz cod and chips and though i didn't eat much due to feeling ill had i been well i would have done the same, the batter was very thick and gooey inside with very large thick flakes and no taste. My husbands normal cod had nice small flakes and was a lovely taste at tail end but lost its flavour as it went on. Not as previous visits or the take out a few weeks ago.

First time visit to this restaurant as a birthday celebration for my son. It was a Wednesday evening and although the food was very good there was obviously an issue with the number of staff on duty. There was one waiter who was only allowed to take drinks orders (arrived at 7pm and had to wait 20 mins to order drinks) and did not even know what type of wine the house wine was. The other waiter was taking food orders and preparing the drinks behind the bar. We waited 40 mins before we ordered our food and that was only after I went to the bar to complain. To be fair the waiter did apologise and the food we ordered came out very quickly and was tasty. Also disappointing that they did not have ANY desserts despite a reasonable selection on the menu. If we had not been out for a special occasion we would have walked out after 30 mins. I acknowledge that the restaurant was very busy they needed more service staff.

The Magpie Cafe was recommended to me, and I'm certainly glad I paid a visit. The food was excellent and the service couldn't be faulted. Many thanks, I'll definitely be back.

We had take away Fish & Chips several times and they were amazing, on monday eve we ate inside. OMG. It was everything we had hoped for and more. We had the shared seafood platter and it was so good, and so generous. i honestly think you could charge 10-20 pounds more and it would still be good value. We couldnt finish it and the friendly staff gave us a box to take it away and we had a lovely light dinner for 2 the next night also from leftovers - i wont come to whitby without booking the magpie cafe. Brilliant

Very good service, excellent food!

We have had a wonderful stay at the bay with the only thing really letting it down being our trip to the John Paul Jones. We booked a table weeks ago and were really looking forward to a Sunday dinner out. We had several reminder emails about our booking so when we arrived were very disappointed to find the only menu on offer was the click and collect one and no one had thought to let us know. Had we been called or emailed we would have gone somewhere where we could of had something other than a burger or pizza. My husband was told the limited menu was because the food delivery had been messed up by the supplier, we then overheard someone else being told it was because they were short on chefs so who knows the real reason. Whilst this was disappointing my main issue came later in the visit. I ordered a chicken burger and asked if it was possible to have a slice of halloumi on it as an add on. The gentleman who took our order said no problem and off he went to put our order through. The food came out in a reasonable length of time so no complaint there and tasted fine for what it was. When we came to pay however, my husband did so without checking the individual items and as I was in the bathroom neither of noticed until he’d already paid that we’d been charged £6.95 for the halloumi slice on the burger. I approached a member of staff to query this whose response was “well we don’t do halloumi as an extra burger topping so I’ll have to speak to the chef” and walked off. Interesting response as I’d already had it and eaten it. The gentleman who had taken my order then came back out and said he’d put it through as a starter because they don’t do it as an actual burger topping. I asked him why he’d not let me know that at the time because quite frankly I don’t know anyone who’d be happy to pay £6.95 for a slice of cheese on a burger. I received no apology and no offer of any sort of refund, just an explanation that other people are happy to pay £6.95 for a halloumi starter. I left extremely cross and will not be returning as the staff seemed to completely miss the point that it actually wasn’t the cost that annoyed me it was that they didn’t communicate appropriately and then behaved as if I was in the wrong for questioning why I had been over charged. Very poor customer service and a real let down for what is otherwise a very good holiday site.

Great Covid control and fantastic toilets. Food very good - lovely calamari and oysters. Mushy peas excellent and scampi was fantastic. Overall a lovely experience and service was thoughtful and kind.

Just wow! If you love seafood this is the place. We had the seafood platter and whilst it is quite expensive, the amount and quality of the seafood you get is well worth the money (the lobster, crab and oysters alone would have been worth the price). The service was great and our whole experience was so good, we’ve booked to return tonight.

We had a wonderful meal at Magpie Cafe. The staff were friendly, great food portions, and tasty. We would definitely go back.

We have been visiting the Magpie for over 20 years, it's a must when we come to Whitby. Things are somewhat different since covid but the cod and chips is still our favourite ever and the staff are great.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. Oysters for me, then we both went for cod and chips - excellent! A bit surprised by the strong range of desserts, both good. Wine by the glass, bottle and carafe was very flexible. Excellent value.

Lovely meal -as always All COVID protocol in place . Staff attentive and helpful -especially with our little Grandson. Return several times a year during our visits to Whitby

We've been coming here, once a year for at least the past 15 years. We are now carrying on the tradition with our children. This is the first time we attended since lockdown restrictions were eased As usual, the food was not a disappointment. Portion sizes are huge and we always feel looked after and satisfied after out visits. Looking forward to our next venture
