Best meal we had in Whitby. Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely fish and chips and tasty desserts. Many people had recommended the Magpie Cafe to me and now I know why. Excellent.

This was our first visit to this pub and our first meal out indoors for 8 months due to covid. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. Had to wait 20mins in a queue to get in the building, even though we had booked in advance. Reduced menu, a lot of meals had sold out. Took over 1hr for our food to arrive, it didn't seem busy. Quality of food was average and it felt over priced. The waiting staff tried their best, polite and friendly.

Booked to eat here because our hotel couldn't fit us in. The meal was so much better than we'd had at the hotel the night before. Excellent set menu. Very good value.

A regular visitor nearly 20 years ago, it had been some years since I last visited. Really pleased to say that our meal was up to the high standards I recall. Delicious gyoza, noodles and curry. The place still had a good atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and polite. Looking forward to returning very soon and it's great to see this place still going strong.

Sunday Lunch was incredible, the best I’ve had in a long time. Great choice of drinks and desserts. Everything was top class that couldn’t be faulted. We will be back!

Not good. Booked for 4pm on Sunday and were given Sunday lunch menus, only to be told. Sunday lunch had finished and there was none left. We weren’t given the evening menu which other tables clearly had. Food took an hour to arrive - even though it wasn’t busy. Nachos had barely any covering but worst of all was the big lump of plastic in my mash potato. On telling the waiter he took it away to tell the chef - then never came back. When another server came I asked her about it she was very apologetic and offered to take the meal off the bill - which was fair enough. Would not recommend and won’t be back.

We owned a house at The Bay for 11 years and have visited The John Paul Jones often. We went 30th May again and this the best experience of all. The pub is newly refurbished which was more than in need of. The pub was packed and the staff customer service was also the best we’ve ever experienced there. The new online booking is fantastic. The food was generous and nice. The prices have gone up a bit but that’s to be expected. Special mention to George our waiter he was brilliant.

Food is second to none, new location but same great tasting food. The new restaurant is in a great location and is beautifully decorated, felt very authentic and greek (if only). Cannot wait to return.

Always on my list when I visit Whitby. Fantastic fresh food and friendly service. Can’t wait to come back again.

Dined here on the 28th May 2021. What a nice little find! Compact & unfussy menu with a good choice of "Specials" & a "Set Menu". Simple food VERY well executed. Staff were attentives & courteous. Recommended. Andrew Turner

Good food and service, looking forward to coming again!

Had our evening meal here on a thursday night the restaurant was quiet full but thats ok nice spacing between table meant it was cover safe. My wife and I dined from the set menu the food was was very good at a really reasonable price, whats not to like.

Great evening at TGLC. The staff were brilliant, looked after us throughout are stay. The food was excellent, you have to try the chicken kebabs! Heading back soon. Thanks all.

A visit to The Magpie is obligatory when in Whitby! Always a great eating experience, with friendly, helpful staff.

Meal was nice, waiting time between order and receipt of meal was around one hour which we were not informed of when arriving. The pub was very busy but as you had to pre book surely this could have been foreseen. The most frustrating part was getting the bill, we had to ask four times before receiving it. Portions were on the small side and were quite expensive at around £12.50 for standard food.

Two excellent meals! Friendly and helpful staff.
