Went for xmas dinner with the family, £50 a head for adults and £27 a head for children. The food and service wasn't particularly good. Interesting to read all the positive reviews about the place on this site and it's a pity we didn't enjoy the same experience as others seem to have done. The pheasant was overcooked and served as whole with little or no room for the vegetables. The prawn and salmon starter was fine (no cooking involved for that dish) but the pate was considered barley edible that came with a rather lacklustre salad. The turkey was also too dry. No wine service and a rather bizarre system for ordering drinks at the table that 'had' to be paid for 'now'. Awful coffee served at the end, with a small carton of UHT cream to whiten it. A carton of UHT cream? An after dinner chocolate mint came with coffee but each one had melted in its packet next to the hot coffee cup it accompanied. I know this won't make a blind bit of difference because the place is so popular and that is probably the problem: complacency. The place was fully booked and the money was in the bank so why bother with the notion of providing the customer with anything approaching a reasonable service; the customer can disregarded as a mug. £180 was the total bill I paid for my wife, children and myself: for what? Happy xmas The Owls at Standish, obviously, I'll not be going again.
