We reserved a table in the Secret Garden area of the TownHouse and enjoyed the drinks we had there with our friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual with deck chairs and tables dotted around. There were however a few issues with our visit that we would like to point out. 1. Upon arriving (and prior on Instagram) we were informed by the staff and signs on the tables that we should use the app to order drinks. We were fine with this and on the app you can buy £10 credit with £5, so that was a bonus. However the app then didn’t allow us to order. We spoke to one of the waiting on staff, who then proceeded to tell us the app hadn’t been set up properly to allow ordering and payment through it. We were told we could use the credit we had purchased on the tab ordered at the table so we didn’t think this was a problem. However when we came to pay the bill, no one had authorisation to allow us to use the credit. So we all have credit on the app that we can’t use. It wouldn’t be a problem if we had taken it upon ourselves to use the app, but we were actually told by staff and signs on the table to use it and then told 5 minutes later that it wasn’t working. I think that’s at best is poor training and at worst is actively misleading or miss selling, telling customers to add credit, knowing they couldn’t use it at that visit. This then is forcing customers to return to use the credit. 2. The other issue we had was the lack of facilities to change a baby, I understand that bars are not really child friendly places but this is a restaurant and hotel that has been open for many years and to not even have a flip down bench in either the girls or men’s toilets is poor in today’s world. I had to change the baby in an office on a desk, which wasn’t ideal. Although there were a few teething issues with the app and the lack of changing facilities, the staff made us feel very welcome and were attentive and the service was efficient. Even if we didn’t have a credit left over on the app, we would still be returning.

We enjoyed afternoon tea in the secret garden which was lovely as the weather was so sunny. Food was lovely; afternoon tea included finger sandwiches, mini bagel and wrap with scones and cakes. Coffee was offered on frequent basis. Staff were really friendly and helpful. On the table there was a request for drinks to be ordered with a qr code; ive used others before but this was tiresome. Some of the staff said" don't bother and they took order" .

Booked for drinks only on Saturday afternoon and added 2 friends at the last minute! Drinks quite pricey and served in plastic from the bar in the garden. Blowing a gale so not the best experience! Having said all that, the staff were lovely. They added our friends without a problem and moved us to a more sheltered table after complaining about the wind! I would definitely go back - the weather spoilt it, but on a sunny day I can think of nowhere better to while away an afternoon!

I've been here a number of times before and always enjoyed it. This time it was rather disappointing.very few very plain sandwiches.cakes appeared shop bought.nothing exciting.not good value for money sadly.

Me and my wife enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea in the garden area of this hotel, which was absolutely delicious. The hidden garden area is nice and quiet and looks gorgeous. The staff were really friendly and helpful, I would definitely recommend this location.

We had a few afternoon drinks at The lovely Secret garden. We were welcomed by very friendly and smiley staff. Our 6 year old son was made to feel very welcome. The garden is lovely for drinks and we liked the camper van that is in use at the weekends. We can’t wait to come back. Keep up the good excellent customer service!

We enjoyed an afternoon tea, service was very good with nothing too much trouble. A variety of sandwiches and a smoked salmon mini bagel, scones with jam and clotted cream, vanilla, lemon and chocolate sponge and a vanilla pannacotta with raspberry coulis. Delicious! Didn’t have to wait long for our food or a tea/coffee top up. Excellent and fast service!

We used a Christmas voucher, and chose the bottomless cream tea deal. It was a momentous occasion, as our first trip out coming over the border from Wales since the lockdown. It was perfect all the way through. I phoned pre arrival to check as I'd given two different times and been told it was up to us, and that our wish to sit outside could be respected but it was rather windy. Sam's customer focused and friendly approach at that point and throughout our visit ensured that our experience was highly memorable and felt special and chilled. We chose to sit indoors where he'd already laid the table nicely for us. The food was varied and delicious; we were able to take our time, and the bubbles flowed. he struck the perfect balance of being attentive without being intrusive. We wish you all the best with the new venture in the garden with the VW Beetle bar..... we can't wait to return ! Fabulous afternoon tea in The Secret Garden - excellent food and friendly service

We enjoyed our sparking afternoon tea at the Townhouse Chester. They sandwiches were fresh, scones delicious and the variety of cakes superb. We also had a couple of delightful cocktails . We were well looked after by the staff with nothing being too much trouble. We will be back!

Afternoon tea with a friend - was fantastic freshly prepared and home-baked cakes and scones. Customer service from the two members of staff we came across were polite and helpful. The townhouse is a real little hidden gem in Chester. I will definitely be returning. Thank you.
