Kenza – CityMedcalf is an ex-butcher shop turned restaurant. It’s a jeans place for serious eaters. In the past two years it’s climbed the ladder from good to very good and, at times, outstanding. Portions are generous. It specialises in old fashioned meat and two veg - but the meat is as you want (you can have it rare, rose or well done if you really have to) and the vegetables are often surprising and always good: there’s nothing English about this English fare. Puddings are English schoolboys’ dreams. Good wine list and ciders and beers. The chef has a real flair; the wine buyer is conservative and has got it right; staff are friendly; it’s bloody cold in winter - but so good you should go nonetheless. It's cheap for what you get. Try it.
Medcalf – CityThe Windmill does such fantastic food, it's such a surprise, getting lovely Italian food in a casual pub setting. I'd definitely recommend the Windmill.
Windmill, The – CityI finally ate at the Kasturi after numerous failed visits. Of course, it could have been a big let-down but it was far from that. The food was fantastic and the service very friendly. Can't think of an Indian restaurant that comes close to this.
Kasturi – CityI used to go here 3-4 years ago for a period of about 5 years and rated it as one of the best Italian restaurants overall in London. I hope that this situation has not changed, and I will be going again in several weeks and will report here as to what I find. The food was always of a high standard and quality, without being "poncey", and the wine list was one of the best Italians in town, all chosen by the proprietor, Enzo, and covering a broad quality and price range for all pockets. The grappas on offer were stupendous, with many available that you cannot find in the UK, and worth many trips back until you have sampled them all! Service used to be exceptional, not hindered by the bevy of attractive young women mixed with experienced older staff (of both sexes!). Meeting Enzo, the owner, is also quite an experience, as he represents the best of English born Italian origin restaurant entrepreneurs, and he will also bend your ear about the second love in his life (not his wife) - his love of Ferraris, attested to by the photos on the walls. You will always find plenty of beautiful fresh flowers, but always make sure you book upstairs, unless you are a fan of eating in windowless cellars downstairs.
Taberna Etrusca – CityFabulous French brasserie with such a lovely view into leadenhall market. really great food - proper brasserie food - just right for these chilly winter months. It's so good and the staff so lovely I'm going back in January for my birthday dinner :-)
Lucs Brasserie – CityBrowns has one of the finest festive fayres around for a very merry Christmas and is guaranteed to get your party in a merry mood. Take the top quality dishes and professional staff, add to that the stylish surroundings and your Christmas package is complete. Christmas party bookings are now being taken, and they can accommodate celebrations on every scale; from intimate lunches to high capacity evening parties. The Christmas menu this year is both traditional and alternative with vegetarian options on every course. The Browns menu begins with the choice of four delicious starters - Red Onion Tart, Smoked Salmon Timbale, Roast Tomato Soup or Roasted Figs and Air Dried Ham Salad. Then, take your pick from the obligatory Roast Turkey with all the trimmings, Vegetable Suet Pudding, Fillet of Beef on Toasted Brioche or Baked Monkfish - all accompanied by a selection of winter vegetables. Traditional Plum pudding, Chocolate Fondant Cake or Vanilla Panacotta follow, finishing off with some mini mince pies.
Browns Restaurant – CityIt ain't much to look at but this is a hidden gem. The chef/owner Fabrizio is very friendly and his cooking would not be out of place in a top class award winning Italian restaurant. He is passionate about what he does. If you ask him for a selection of starters he will whip up a selection of dishes in next to no time. The food is delicious! It is quite cheap too. You should try it.
Fabrizio – CityAn excellent restaurant and wine bar with great views over Leadenhall Market. The food is a mixture of traditional and Italian with a few innovations thrown in.
Brokers Wine Bar and Restaurant – CityA very good and noisy lunch time restaurant in the Sq mile Getting into the seat is for the dexterous, the food is always fresh and the presentation very good. The service is very quick even when full. Not a place for a romantic lunch/dinner as you need to shout to be heard
Tokyo City – CityPortal looks like a small venue until you step inside - it opens out to a gigantic glass conservatory filled with impeccably-dressed tables. Despite the large scale, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, the owner Antonio always has time to greet us as we arrive. The menu's not overpriced - the seafood is the freshest I've found this far inland - try the squid, prawn and chorizo skewers on lemon rice and the custard tartlets are an exquisite dessert. Worth the extra dollar for a top notch city lunch!
Portal Restaurant and Bar, The – CityThis is mainly a City lunchtime place which stands out because of the fantastically fresh ingredients; which are all prepared freshly on the premises. The food is great value given the quality. Reasonably priced and well selected wines too.
Hilliard – CityI WAS IN CANTALOUPE FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST WEEK. I had a great time! food was really good ( had a selection of tapas with my girlfriend) the sofa area at the back was comfy and inviting, and I found the service smiley and helpful. What a cool place!
Cantaloupe Bar and Restaurant – CityKasturi offers the best Indian food in the City. Great dishes that you can rarely find elsewhere and the service is always with a smile. They regularly have special events and they offer a service where you can book to go into the kitchen and watch your meal cooked on Mondays and Tuesdays if you book in advance. Highly recommended.
Kasturi – CityYou must try this place, it is a real gem. The food was delicious, beautifully presented & very reasonably priced. I will definitely be going back & soon!
Amico Bio – CityThis is a great place! The food is very fresh, the jasmine tea is divine. And eat as much as you like for £5
Kin – CityGreat location with a fab eating / bar area outside with views across the city.Food excellent, Sunday lunch set menu good. Live jazz music sometimes played to add to the atmosphere.
Chez Gerard – CityLocated within a row of shops at the heart of the City, Mehek's diners could be in for a surprise on their first visit. The doors lead to a glitzy bar covering almost half of the front portion of the restaurant before opening out to a considerable dining area at the back. Diners were, unsurprisingly, mostly City-types and the restaurant was busy even early in the week. Mehek's décor and atmosphere match the restaurant's clients - this is a sterile, clean, contemporary, luxurious and sophisticated city space. The main dining room features neutral colours with terracotta being predominant and ?orokas?(antique wooden panels) hanging on the walls. Mehek boasts an intriguing, well-crafted Indian menu that raises expectation. The starters are reasonably priced from £3 to £7, with main courses ranging from £7 to £15. Of most interest were the house specialities like Hash Hyderabadi (marinated duck with sesame seeds, coconut and peanut sauce). But the star of the evening was undoubtedly the Boro Chingri Pardanashi (top-drawer king prawns, £14.90, cooked in a mild curry and served inside a fresh coconut), with high standard breads and rice to accompany. An exceptional taste, this dish is highly recommended for seafood fans. Ordinarily, Indian restaurants are not known for their wine selections, but at Mehek, connoisseurs can select from a respectable menu ranging from £12 upwards. The 2003 Santa Isabel Argentinian Malbec, a snip at £17 a bottle, with deliciously fruity flavour complimented the spices of the food. A second, more extensive wine list is available on demand for those with corporate credit cards. With friendly and attentive staff, Mehek is a diverting experience in the Moorgate area. Whether you want to play it safe with familiar dishes or push the boat out and be a little adventurous, Mehek likely has the dish for you.
